Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

Some report it takes a few days past 180. How long has it been?

Real bummer for a lot of people if they don't unlock these. Nowhere in terms does it say it has to be active the whole time.
I have had mine for around 189 days.

More specifically, what exact date did you activate the phone? Some months are 30 days and others are 31 days. We have to get an exact day count from activation.
~ 189 days from activation date

What message are you getting when you try to unlock it?

Does it say "Unable to connect to host"?

If so, you need to try a different wifi.

Once you click unlock, there's another button called "permanent unlock"

I bought a Moto phone in July and a OnePlus in August and both unlocked. Both from Metro. Both only first month. Both SIMs stay in until unlocked and then removed.
It keeps on giving message that Phone is locked and not met the unlock period. Was your moto phone the same as this one or a different one?

Firmware for unlocking? There's no such thing.
Then, how can a user know the phone will be automatically unlocked after 180 days if no firmware or app installed?

People may complain about the misleading info after 6 months because of unable to unlock the phone. Be careful before jumping in.

Because of this:
https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/unlock

WiFi needs to be activated and connected for the unlock to work.

There is an unlock app (faceless - no UI) that is tied to "Device Unlock" in settings (under About Phone). If you search for Unlock in settings, you can see the actual faceless app that doesn't give an Open option when you tap on it. You won't be able to see an Unlock app in app drawer.

You are delusional. Stop lying saying that you use an iPhone 6s for 5 or 6 years. Who said anything about 8,000 mAh battery? I am simply bashing a 1810 mAh battery. Battery life matter. It is what it is but you want to pretend that you get awesome iphone 6s battery life when 99.99999999999999999% disagree.
As another iPhone 6s user, think your stats are off by a few %. Regardless of what you think about that phone, ours is still going strong with good battery life. My wife used it for 2 years, then I used it for another year then it was handed down to my son. Still works great and holds a decent charge all day for his uses. It is still snappy, screen is still nice and that is comparing it to my S22+.

Since there were some questions on what method I followed, posting this to answer all questions in one place.

Bought the phone, activated, used phone to make calls etc in the first month, even used it to get Tmobile Tuesdays free deal once
Didn't pay month 2 onward since I bought a Tracfone with annual plan
Left SIM in, and kept using phone on Wifi
After 180 days I tried to unlock multiple times using multiple wifi networks (have two ISPs)
Finally called customer service and was given the answer that phone has not been used on activated SIM for 180 days so cannot be unlocked
I am planning to call again during day time hours, hoping to get a customer service agent here in the US, will post on here after that call

Let's see what will happen. Please update your findings, whether the continuous usage for 6 months is required or not before the phone can be unlocked.

Escalate to a Metro manager. Provide the manager with Metro's unlock policy. If they refuse, tell them that you will file a complaint with the FCC. Get the name, location, and time of incident. Provide the FCC with all relevant info including the link to Metro's unlock policy.

I'm a T Mo customer and I can always unlock all my T Mo phones after about one week of activation. They know not to mess around when they had to answer to the FCC a few years back.

https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/unlock

contact the FCC for assistance.

customer service is not going to unlock unless you can prove you paid for service for 180 days

People on the MetroPCS subreddit have stated that the 180 day trick for unlocking has been "patched" in newer phones. Has anyone with a Moto G Stlus 5G 2022 from MetroPCS been able to network unlock their phone? Or are we just going by what works on other MetroPCS phones?
