Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

Yes, because you called, they marked your account for 6 months usage, if you call again, they will add 6 more months.

Main problem for Moto is that their designs are a bit dated and their cameras are weak. If you only compare specs, you can't see these things.
I use the phone, and provide my real world experience. The user interface is stable is fast. Works just as well as the top-of-the-line Iphone at the store (with the stuffs that I want to do on a phone). A cool "designer" phone isn't going to sell for $40 plus one free month of wireless service.

The Moto's main camera is average to good under normal lighting . It's definitely NOT weak. No camera phones on the market today can come close to my Sony Alpha with big lens to capture light and massive optical sensors. Get a decent camera if you're into great photography.

File a complaint with the FCC by providing the FCC with Metro's term for unlock. Sit back and wait for someone from T Mobile's office of the president to contact you to provide you with the unlock instruction. Contact the FCC again with the case number if they play game.

Yeah I agree it's pretty decent for $40. I don't think it's stellar but it's not terrible either. And most people who are looking for a cheap prepaid aren't too worried about DSLR camera on their cell phones to begin with. We have $1500 phones for those people.

My Sony Alpha with the basic camera doesn't cost $1500, The Sony's picture owns any camera phone on the market today and the next ten years. Why? Can't sell a fancy phone with a huge lens to capture light. Physics 101.

Right…all camera phones are mediocre even the best. Physics can't be changed. Software does make a difference but only to a certain point. I can find a 10 year old point and shoot that runs circles around the best $1600 smart phone camera available today.

Bruh every phone maybe $200 and up does well in good lighting. Night time photos and portrait mode relies on good computational photography and the Motos don't have that. Even their highest end phone, the Moto Edge+ 2022, doesn't do that well in low light.

How serious are you about comparing a Sony Alpha II/III to smartphones? You're not going to take that thing everywhere you go. I have a Canon EOS R and I'm definitely not bringing that thing to restaurants or events where I might take indoor low light photos for sharing with friends. If you want to compare apples and oranges, then I'll even point out that even suppose you lug around your mirrorless everywhere, on full auto, flagship phone cameras often take more pleasing photos for social media than high end mirrorless cameras. When I take my EOS R out for photos it's going to be planned out, what lens I'm going to take, exactly what time I'm going to get the best lighting etc, it's a very deliberate process. Totally different scenario than when you're using smartphone cameras 99% of the time.

If I'm serious about night photos, then I use a tripod and/or quality flash. Digital photo interpolation is adequate for 8 1/2" x 11" print. It doesn't take much to wow social media junkies.

Again, most people don't need to take low light picture. The build in flash is adequate to achieve quality photos.

Some people would pay extra for IP6x protection when a heavy duty $1 zip lock bag will do the job at greater depth. Course the IP6x protection goes out the windows after the warranty expires. Sacrificing 3.5mm audio jack for this is not smart.

Marketing works. That's why people buy flagship phones.

You're definitely going off on a tangent there. But OK let's say we're all idiots who listen to marketing and marketing tells us sheep that cameras are important. Then they're not doing themselves any favors by making inferior cameras. There hasn't been any Moto's camera system that has gotten stellar reviews in the last 5 years. They're just worse than Samsungs, Pixels, and even OnePlus at the same price point. If they want to improve their brand premium, maybe get better on the things that people care about.

Received the phone, popped in the sim, turned it on, and it won't connect to the network....

According to the Metro coverage map, I'm in an area designated as 'partner 3g/2g', and that service is 'temporarily unavailable'.

Do I have to take the phone out of that area to activate it? TIA
Activation is on the web. Nothing to do with popping in your sim. But once you pop in, you will get a text after activation. It took me less than 5 seconds to activate although rendering of the web page was sad. Rest of their website is slow and pathetic.

All you need is your order number and zip code to activate. The activation email they sent after shipping leads me to a page where I activate by giving my details and picking new pin. I cancelled that and went from main page link on the top.

I disagree. I think most people take indoor, low light shots, most parties and dinner gatherings are indoors at night for example, and flash is no substitute.

The purchase is as follows:
1. go to website, add this phone, and add a $40 prepaid plan
2. and checkout and pay for $40 + tax

Is that all?
