From a supposedly T-Mobile employee on Reddit, here is the latest update (5/1/2023) on Autopay discount:

Source:
https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/...ange_date/

The new autopay changes requiring a debit card or bank account to receive the discount goes into effect on May 18th.

EDIT: May 18th is for new and existing customers just enrolling in autopay

May 20th customers enrolled in autopay without debit card/back account/T-Mobile money will receive text messages over the next several months depending on bill cycle. They will receive a text message 30 days before their autopay discount is removed. Then a 15 day reminder, and again 3 days before. So the date for existing customers enrolled in autopay will vary from account to account.

Most reloadable cards are eligible for the autopay discount while non-reloadable are not and cannot be used for autopay.

Will update this post with more information as I get it.

Extremely unhappy like everyone here
MadMadMad
T-mobile is getting hacked 1-2 times a year and received complaint from hackers that they have all info already and need more - for example bank & debit card accounts.
And T-mobile responded.
Confused
Message to customers - if you want to keep your info away from hackers - pay us $5/line
MadMadMadMadMadMad

No way I will give them what they want - waiting for good deal from other carriers.
As of now I am letting them pay to Visa "per transaction" fee - I am paying $2-$5 1-2 times every day ($2 is minimum on T-mo).
If we all start doing it this way - maybe it will make them a bit less happy and affect them.
Embarrassment

Came here to see any comments about how paying the bill manually via cc before autopay date has worked or not in terms of retaining autopay discount.
I got the manual payment to go through, let's see if I have the discount next month...

Also, my Capital One card has $28 back as a statement credit if you click through from the cash back link on capitalone.com, so hopefully that will go through as well.

Auto-payment discount worked fine after pre-payment with CC, no issues.

I have changed profile settings so TMO will send statements by postal mail. If this becomes a hassle (and costly) for them, then maybe they will give some incentive for CC autopay.

Looks like T-Mobile is losing out on phone insurance revenue when people use credit cards that offer phone insurance, is now requiring a debit card or bank account to continue receiving the discount.

Concerned other carriers will follow, hesitant to make a move quite yet.

AT&T has already started doing this. It goes effective in October. I received the following email in July.

Subject: Your Auto Pay & Paperless discount is changing

Message: As early as October 2nd, the AutoPay and Paperless discount for customers paying by credit card will change from $10 to $5 per line.

You currently have a credit card on file. If you'd like to continue receiving your $10 monthly AutoPay & Paperless discount per line, go to att.com/change or call us at 800.331.0500 to update your payment type to a debit card or bank account.

Want to continue using the credit card on file? No problem. We will continue to process your bill and payment as usual, now with a monthly $5 discount per line.

oh damn.. those bitches finally did it. It's a bit confusing, because it claims cost in general will increase $10/line but then T-Mobile states: "We are not raising the price of any of our plans; we are moving you to a newer plan with more benefits at a different cost." sounds like word trickery to me. but at least we can opt out for the short term it seems.

I've been with T-mobile for about 2 decades.. might need to start keeping my options open now.

You can say it is trickery but newer (more expensive) plan with more benefits at different cost mean you are paying for stuff (like Netflex on Us or a year of free AAA membership stuff that posted in SD before) that you may not need. So there statement of "more benefits" may be partially true but for older customer, we may not need those or want to pay for those benefit/feature. And it is NOT FREE benefit(s) if we have to pay extra for it when switching plan.

yes.. but that's the thing. if folks on grandfathered plans wanted the benefits of the newer plans, they would "voluntarily" switch to those plans. so, my guess is most stay on the older plans because they don't want (or need) the extra benefits from the newer plans. now everyone is being forced.. although, we know companies profit more overall from bundling services.

so, now, people deal with it or start taking business elsewhere.
