8GB + SSD, this is what a cheap and basic but an usable windows laptop should be , at least….
though some may be wishing for IPS panel as well.

What are you smoking? The only thing you can upgrade on the Walmart one is to add an nvme to it. This one has a sodimm slot you can upgrade as well as a sata port. This on is far superior to the walmart version.

To close the loop on this, since I had made several posts earlier about this laptop.

I picked up one. I know speed is relative, especially with the workload you are throwing at it, but this is a good, fast laptop, for the price. I did migrate it out of Windows S mode and ran some debloat scripts.

While at Microcenter I picked up a Inland brand 512GB Sata SSD hard drive. They had them at the Atlanta/Duluth store for $25. It has a free bay for an internal SSD hard drive.

The laptop does not come with a sata cable or screws to mount a hard drive. I ordered this one.

I can confirm that it fits perfectly, is exactly the correct length, and works. It is a bit tedious to connect the ribbon cable to the motherboard.

This isn't a gaming or high end business laptop, but for my use case, it's great. So far, no complaints.

This, partially. I don't agree that it's outdated (It's only 2 generations behind) and I don't agree about needing 4 cores, some people will do fine with 2 fast cores vs. 4 slower ones. This computer is also upgradeable, to an extent.

Notwithstanding the 2 cores (which are much faster since they are 11th gen vs. 8th gen), refurb workstation notebooks are way more upgradeable in every way and most come with backlit keyboards as well as full hd screens, though if you don't care for a 1080p screen or ever using Windows 11, you can get them for sub $200.

In the end, if whatever you're using the laptop for is mostly using a single core most of the time, this may be a good choice. The price is certainly right. For anything else, if you're not sure, or if you're looking for something a bit more versatile, you can look into Dell refurbs - just make sure to get a Grade A.

This is a good laptop for work or school. I have the 4GB model and added 8GB of RAM in the free RAM slot (this one has a 4GB). Been using it to work when I don't want to sit on my work chair at home all day. Run Zoom, Teams, Outlook, etc. all at the same time with no slowness.

I have an HP that has a 2-core Ryzen 3 CPU. For basic day-to-day tasks, it's plenty usable. Oh, and it was $150 at Micro Center. At this price level, we need to tame expectations. I did, and was plenty surprised by today's lowly dual-core CPU.

I like both laptops but one is a toy (nothing wrong with toys, I love to tinker and I am very cheap laugh out loud ) and one is a "real" laptop for $70 more
  • emmc vs pci express x4 ssd. Emmc maxes out at 250 MB/s read and 125 MB/s write with current generations. It is literally built into the spec emmc can not surpass that speed. By contrast the ssd can max out at 3000 MB/s if it hits max spec. Now real world performance what ratio is different we will not know until someone tests it but it will be a substantial difference.
  • 4 vs 8 gb of ram
  • The CPUs are night and day the Pentium is 1.0x and the core i3 is 2.1x to 2.3x depending on what test you use.
  • 720p vs 1080p resolution.
  • Price the toy is cheaper and I like cheaper, but you are getting a whole lot more for $70 more aka 154% the price.

Both are good Peace the i3 Microcenter is just substantially better in a way my bullet list can not capture, they are just different types of machines is what I am trying to signify. Yet I like both.

Of course I can still find fault with the $200 Microcenter laptop, but my fault here is the screen and for that price it is an acceptable trade off.

I don't know whether this answers your question exactly, but it does appear likely that the SSD is in the M.2 slot thus leaving the SATA slot open.
