I assume he meant qnap, but newegg isnt far behind these days.

Sad to say he could have be talking about both, or either.

On paper the quad core cpu and 2GB ram is not bad.
I'm particularly interested in QTS' snapshot feature which was lacking in WD's NAS systems.

With consumer grade products, I'd never directly expose a NAS to the Internet. Just seems far too risky unless your data is of relatively low value.

Troll as troll can get.
Did QNap by default enable services that could be exploited? Yes. Did QNap make it too easy for the end-user to expose services to the internet without sufficient hardening? Yes. Did QNap release updates to change that behavior? Yes.
Are there still bugs? Yes.

Now in text above replace QNap with Synology or any other brand. Lesson to be learned? NAS or any technology (IOT/NVR) shouldn't be exposed to the internet without more careful planning and thought.

I've owned 3 different QNap (running 453D) and I'd say avoid arm and stick with intel if you're going to do anything than just plain storage (VM or transcoding, Intel has quicksync to assist with decode. RAM is typically upgradeable in these systems, so if you plan on running any small containers (piHole) it's pretty handy.

I'd pass on this. But if you can find <$100 per bay that's ok, <$80 I'd consider pulling the trigger.

That's really sad considering Newegg used to be decent in the not so distant past.

There is some truth about QNAP being vulnerable, but honestly if you practice good security hygiene, you should never (or rarely) expose any ports on the internet, those days are gone when you can open some random ports via internet and access your home network. These days threat actors have became a lot more smarter and efficient.

On a positive note, I have been using my QNAP NAS for a couple of years and it has been a great asset. It is very user-friendly, making it an excellent option for the average home user, and has a wide range of additional features that can be utilized for more advanced purposes. Overall, I have been quite satisfied with my experience using the QNAP NAS.

As others have mentioned don't believe the haters. Been using just about every brand of NAS and QNAP is no more vulnerable than Synology, Zyxel, or Asustor. They make it easy for users to use advanced functionality which sometimes results in users shooting themselves in the foot. Qnap out of all of them has been the best bang for your buck with the best feature set out there. The only thing it does not do is the SHR which lets you mix and match different capacity drives.

That being said if you just want picture and file storage one of these with an ARM processor is great for that. If your looking to stream and transcode a intel celeron based is your better go to! If you have all your files already in formats that wont need transcoding than even an ARM will do that just fine.
