If you don't own one, buy one for yourself and a friend/relative. Good deal on a nice, sharp knife, perhaps the best bang for the buck in a fixed blade. Repped.

Go for the companion over the basic. The rubber handles are great compared to the plastic ones. Worth the few extra bucks.

Yes but IMO that is a positive. Makes finding a knife much easier when out on the trail/camp site. Can't tell you how many times I wish I had an orange knife instead of a pretty brown handled one when in that situation.

After reading this knowledge guide, I quickly realized that the cheapest knives on sale isn't rank very high on the professional list. $9 vs $300. Oh well, can't have it all. I'll just buy a bunch of $9 and hope for the best. Added bonus of buying cheap: won't hate myself for losing it while camping.

There are a million videos out there for knife sharpening, the process for a good result is understanding the concept of what you are trying to do. Remove metal to create a perfect 'edge'. Each stone has a different grind or porosity that can equate to a certain grit or smoothness level. You'll want to start low and go high...lower or rougher surface will remove more metal, and then the higher grit or smoother surface will removal smaller more fine amounts to give you your finished edge. The quickest fool proof method I've seen are using Smiths Diamond combination sharpener. If you want to get fancy you can look for a "DMT" stone, with 3 levels of stones. The level of grit might look something like this: 300-600-1000. Some also use a grinder or one of those variants of a 'system'. There's more than one way to skin a cat I suppose, obviously people struggle with this and that's why there are so many products out there.

There are other stones too like India stones, or Arkansas whetstones...you want to hold the blade at approximately 22 degrees (half of 45, which is half of 90) and then start honing away. I'm no expert but that gets me a usable result! You gotta start somewhere, better to start on a $10 knife than say a $100 knife or a knife that is currently and actively being used in a survival scenario or on the job.
Morakniv fixed blades are sharpened at 27°, not 22°.

These aren't full tang... may not be an issue for most - especially at these prices... but worthy to note...
They have an extra sturdy version which has a thicker blade. I have 4 of those and use them to baton. None have ever failed.

what is the best and cheapest way to sharpen a knife? I got a Japanese steel knife 3 months ago and it was great for a little but, i cut too many potatoes with it and needs sharping Smilie

Im just scared i might not sharpen the stuff at the right angle or break it Smilie
Don't listen to these guys on here. If you cut potatoes you don't need to sharpen the knife ... probably unless you have damaged the edge. Sharpening involves removing metal. What you need to do is just hone the edge, which is to just realign the edge. There is cheap and easy which is to get a multi stage pull through sharpener and just use the ceramic rods. Pull the blade through until it goes through smoothly. The cheapest way is to flip over a ceramic coffee mug and glide the edge over the rough ceramic edge on the bottom. Being a Japanese knife it probably has an Asian edge which is 15 degrees or less. I would not use any sharpeners on it to remove metal unless the sharpener says it is 15 degrees. Using the wrong angle will screw up your knife. Sushi knives are even worse. Those have a single bevel. If you have one of those I recommend you actually read up on how to sharpen and don't rely on asking random people on here.

Another good alternative to the Morakniv is the Jellas, I have a few of both decent knives.

I've never learned how to hand sharpen mora companion. I used one of those ebay clones with adjustable angle, modded it, put a secondary bevel. Didn't like and got rid of it. Can't have another useless knife. Already have enough kitchen knives. Needed something more heavy duty.

Have owned and used a dozen styles of sharpeners and stones in the past 40 years. For the needs of a casual user, for the money IMHO it is hard to beat a $5 tacklebox/pocket/keychain pull thru sharpener. A few pulls thru the metal side if chinked/chipped then a few pulls thru the ceramic side is what I taught my wife to do for her kitchen knives if I am not around. 1000 ways to do it, but this is a cheap and easy way that gives easily reproducable "FAIR to GOOD" results for a casual user....IMHO.

a preset knife sharpener from amazon is the easiest to use and what i use. you don't need to be an expert just pull it thru the sharpener, cheap but works and lots of variations to peruse......

these sharp?
Yes but its work to keep them sharp
I wont buy anymore of these because they are too stubby
No fun to cut-up a steak or pomegranate with these.
Cutting twine or something they are ok.
Having a couple is good but they aren't that great despite some hype
The carbon knives are sharp but they stain-up fast and give food a funny taste/smell - stick to stainless.
