If you don't own one, buy one for yourself and a friend/relative. Good deal on a nice, sharp knife, perhaps the best bang for the buck in a fixed blade. Repped.

Go for the companion over the basic. The rubber handles are great compared to the plastic ones. Worth the few extra bucks.

Yes but IMO that is a positive. Makes finding a knife much easier when out on the trail/camp site. Can't tell you how many times I wish I had an orange knife instead of a pretty brown handled one when in that situation.

Call you help me understand the difference between cheap metal and expensive metal? Like, is expensive metal harder but more prone to corrosion? Also, why is it more expensive? Just economies of scale?
As a knife newbie, my basic research comes from fishing and needing a knife that doesn't corrode with salt water exposure. Turns out, that's very expensive $150 spyderco knives (H1 and to a lesser extent VG10). The increase cost is the material its made of (its not pure steel its an alloy, a mix of the elements that make the metal is like a recipie and its all different and provides the different characteristics), and the harder process involved to make. For the cut quality itself, there is a wide range of how hard the metal is, how long it keeps its edge, and how resistant it is to corrosion (mostly when neglected). If you keep your knife clean and dry after use, corrosion isn't a huge issue, but after a long night of fishing i've never washed my knives.

After waiting for spyderco to never go on sale, I now use Morakniv knives for fishing at the pier and they're lasting the longest out of all the other cheap knives i've used (mostly various pocket knives). I'm just cutting up bait and small fish like mackerel tho.

That sharpener doesn't have the correct sharpening angle for a Morakniv. They have a 27 degree Scandi grind (54 degrees angle). They're the easiest edge to sharpen, since the edge covers nearly half the blade. This is intentional so anyone can easily sharpen the knife on any flat stone or brick when in a pinch. It's nearly impossible to sharpen at the wrong angle on a flat stone with this knife, even with no prior practice. These are great to carry in a camping/hiking bag: https://www.amazon.com/Work-Sharp...149&sr=8-3 [amazon.com]
I may have a bias against pull-through sharpeners due to being a chef for 20 years, but we were always taught to steer clear of them because they ruin knives (I've seen it happen many times). They create chips on the edge, even if they're sometimes too small to see.
interesting.

so what happens if i would put a new angle on the knife. it would seem to sharpen ok using a course and then a fine sharpener.

pull through sharpeners are attractive for speed of results and no need for skill. i have used them for years and it seems to give a very sharp edge for very little effort. of course doing it the correct way would be the best of all worlds if one care to gain that skill.

thanks.

That's kind of a difficult question to answer but I'll attempt it on a simple level. The balance between good and bad is, blade hardness, durability, ease of sharpening. Quality of scales, hardware, screws, etc. Many knives are 420HD Stainless which is going to be a moderate stainless steel and it will hold an edge decently well and it will be fairly easy to sharpen. The harder the steel the more durable it is, but the more difficult it will be to sharpen. The softer it is, the more easy it is to sharpen. The harder it is, the more likely it will shatter or break and the softer it is, it will bend instead of break. The construction materials, say if it's made out of titanium or some other material will make it quite an expensive knife. Brand preference is huge too though, a handmade knife or limited edition will make it crazy expensive. Benchmade, Kershaw, Spyderco are fairly pricey brands. A quality but reasonable made knife might be Buck, Gerber, CRKT, Leatherman. Anything made from a non-reputable brand may not have trustworthy quality of metal and most likely will be foreign made in China or some other place with less famed quality of production. I've bought my fair share of cheapies and you typically get what you pay for.

Ultimately there are brand preferences which obscure actual quality conversations. People will swear what they have is the best no matter what you say to them. Typically you get what you pay for but that's not a hard and fast rule either, sometimes you're just buying the name. I'm not a metallurgist but I think that is the single greatest most determining factor on the quality of a knife. There are decent ones made overseas in Taiwan or Europe (Switzerland/Germany/Sweden), or elsewhere but some prefer the Made in USA knives. Gerber has cheaper foreign made knives, and also USA made models as well. Just read a ton of reviews, maybe go to the manufacturers site to look at the metal quality. Read some Amazon reviews (skip the lowest and highest and look at the middle of the pack). You can quickly sort out the garbage or paid reviews using well, logic.

Here is an interesting article if you want to read about blade metal materials:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lis..._materials

Hopefully that helps a little - there isn't a direct answer! You might have to do some of our own research and exploring! These Moraknivs are a no brainer though, for $10 bucks, buy one and beat the snot out of it. There are far more expensive knives out there but I know of no other knife that has this kind of good quality at this price point.

There are different styles but I would pay most attention to the blade composition/material, the
High Carbon Steel will be prone to rusting while the stainless steel will keep just fine. Usually the stainless is more expensive because it is a more expensive material and it has obvious benefits to prolonged used. Some have complained that these don't hold up well in salt water but I imagine that's a special application. Here in the Midwest mine has been a gem, very decent capable knife. Very popular knife amongst the bushcraft community and a very affordable one at that. It's not on par with a 100 dollar knife, don't use it for battening wood or beating on it and it will treat you right.

this one seems to be stainless steel. do you have high carbon steel one? is it worth getting the SS one instead if you're not gonna take care of it so it wont rust?

I would go with stainless, little to no maintenance will be required.

Moras under 4" are perfectly legal in NY even in NYC. But they're technically illegal if carried within the NYC transit system. To add, unless your profession justifies it, any part of it (sheath included) cannot be visible.

It pays to read.
