Overall the Metro is the best way to get around from the airport and then around Athens. Athens is a super fun place to go at least once. Very Mello place to visit.
Plaka is very touristy but also very nice to go if you are a tourist and lot of things to see and do. If you get an AirBnb then enjoy the local bars and restaurants they are great too. Again the architecture is kinda run down which is a long long story but the ancient and newer places are nice.
Athens isn't the prettiest city. The ruins are wonderful to see, the newly renovated Acropolis Museum is just wonderful. But you really need to get to an island any island doesn't matter which just go to one you will be happy you did. Plane or Ferry your pick. If you pick Ferry make sure you plan on a couple hour delay. They aren't very timely in Greece. Ferry is kinda fun though if you get one of the big catamarans.
Food anywhere in Greece is amazing. Please buy cheap greek gyro fast food, please buy expensive greek food, both are equally good. My Vietnamese wife loved how cheap and delicious it is. Probably all the olive oil and fresh veggies and fruit that are gown in Greece. You won't find any fresher seafood anywhere , sea bass locally caught is excellent.
To graduate high school in Greece you must learn English and one other foreign language usually they go with German. Just about anyone will be able to help you with instructions (unless they are older), everyone is super friendly. I am pretty sure tourism is their no 1 industry. Just download Google maps to use offline or even better buy a sim card they are dirt cheap. Cosmote Syntagma Square – Mitropoleos 1 is a good place to get a pay as you go SIM for 35euro. I can't remember if I have every been to someplace that didn't have a menu or instructions in English. They are part of the EU and English French are the two main languages. Again I just googled it their primary industry is tourism. They will be super impressed if you learn some greek phrases but this aint France.
Also please drink a lot of nescafe frappe's I sadly don't believe folks drink them like they used to. Best coffee drink ever!
If you want to extend your trip and really go all-out, fly/sail over to a Greek island, Crete or Santorini.

I have yet to go to Greece, but my experience with visiting non English speaking European countries has been pretty good. Especially if you stay and go to the more touristy areas you should definitely be fine. You'll be surprised how many people can speak English, or know enough English to assist you.

I can second this. Loved Athens, but Delphi and Meteora were our absolute favorites. About a half days journey out of Athens, we'll worth a 1-2 day side trip.

Using these steps, I have always received help. A few years ago, in a smaller town in France, a local actually detoured from her path and led us to the train station. We were extremely thankful for the effort and remember it to this day.
