Don't forget, for every smaller iteration drive you get the SSD Speeds get cut in half

(MB/sec)
256GB = 1500
512 = 3000
1TB = 6000

Pretty crummy, borderline criminal of apple to not advertise this little change and give all the youtube reviews early-access to the 1TB knowingly hiding this important fact upon launch.

The M2 Mac mini base has 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores.

The M2 Mac mini Pro base has 6 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores.

If you have an app that can use those extra cores, the machine could be (for CPU tasks) perhaps 50% faster.

The GPU is 16 cores in the base Pro vs 10 in the normal M2 mini, so it could be 60% faster if you have an app that can use all of those cores.

For most common apps that you as a user use for everyday things, the only thing that matters is single-threaded CPU speed, and at that, the M2 and M2 Pro are exactly the same speed.

I went to the Pro because:
1. It was immediately available
2. It had 2 more TB4 ports
3. I wanted the faster GPU with 60% more GPU cores (for the almost nonexistent MacOS games)
4. The price premium was $330 or so. Not happy, but it is what it is.

The additional 2 cores of CPU didn't really figure into it for me, as I almost never have jobs that overwhelm "even" "just" 4 CPU cores.

For code-compile, multimedia encoding, and some music creation tasks, particularly in Adobe and Apple professional apps, there is a significant gain to be had there. For Chrome, Edge, Safari, Mail, and GarageBand, probably not as much...

How much active memory your computer is using, particularly at idle, is not really an indication of anything. You really have to look at how much individual programs and process are using and how it fluctuates with use. It's more than just looking at how much you have used or free. A computer could have nothing free and still be operating perfectly fine with no noticeable slowdown.

Lol. There's no copy to download from ebay for $15. You buy a license key . And download the official copy from Microsoft.
And let's not talk about depreciation. A Mac pro ,Apple still sells for over $50,000 the trade in is like $900 from Apple. I never saw a current selling pc turn to shit like that
I am not sure I can understand your point and how it is relevant to my comment.

Curious, this might not be the right thread, but any recommendations on what Monitor to use with the Mac mini M2 Pro? I believe if I am right you don't need to a use a MAC monitor and can use anything. Thanks!
I'm use to Windoze with its nice/multiple scaling options.

I'm not that familiar with Mac. This is my first Mac that requires an external monitor. I thought the text was too small when I used a 2560x1440 monitor. The text was bigger and sharper when I used a 4K monitor. A 1920x1080 monitor was good too, just not as sharp as the 4K (obviously). Maybe there is an option to scale differently on the 2560x1440 monitor but I haven't messed with it.

If you go to the Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Displays there are scaling options there. And you can grab a third party program like SwitchRes that'll give you more scaling options.

OK, thanks... I thought I had checked that out already and I didn't see any useful scaling options but I will take another look later. Right now I'm fine with the 1920x1080 monitor and the default scale.

So, out of curiosity I checked it out.... my gut (without doing research) is that Mac OS only supports "regular/normal" DPI and "HiDPI" unlike Windoze. So on a 1920x1080 monitor it uses normal DPI, on a 4K it uses HiDPI, and on a 2560x1440 it uses normal (which in my case produced text that was a little smaller than I'd like)... and there isn't the array of scaling options that Windoze has... is this correct?

If you option- or ctrl- click on the size options, it might bring up a drop down menu with more sizing options to choose from. Or, you can use a 3rd party util like was mentioned to force various resolutions until you find one you like.

You do not need to use an Apple-brand monitor with any Mac computers. Anything that supports HDMI or USB-C will work fine. On this model the HDMI port is version 2.1 so that supports much higher refresh rates. So most monitors from Samsung, LG, Dell will work
In theory, however, I have a 2018 4k Dell that does not really work w/ HDMI on this machine. It only works via USB-C -> DP. If you go on Dell's support site, they have a bunch of stickied posts that say they don't support their monitors on Macs and you can try at your own risk. I would probably go w/ an LG (or not Dell) to maximize compatibility.

You meant to reply to me, and you quoted someone else.

Let's not pretend the $15 license key is legit.

Macs don't depreciate much. Apple has no interest in supporting the open market, but if you sell the Mac Pro on the open market you and I both you know you'll get far more than $900 for it. I saw one locally at $20k.

And we all know PCs massively depreciate the moment you buy them. Particularly no-name "clonez".
