Last few Kirkland branded single malt bottled by Alexander Murray have been horrible Sherry bombs. Age is not the only factor of determination in single malt finish. I'll try a bottle this time since it's at decent 46% ABV and not watered down to 40%.

The reason why Kirkland via AM is selling at these prices is due the over use/maturation in Sherry Casks which sort of negates the actual good finish on the palate. These are NOT Macallan casks because Macallan had a fire in their distillery last year and their production/supply itself has been low. Actually it is hard to find Macallan 12 Sherry Cask throughout last year. These must be from casks sold by defunct distilleries or from the larger ones which don't meet their actual branded standards. Some of my favorites below:

Macallan Sherry Cask 12
Oban 14
Lagavulin 16
Balvenie 12
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14
Ardbeg 10
Bowmore 15
Glenlivet 15
Glenfiddich 18
My local Costco had Macallan sherry cask 12 for $53 last year. Limited stock. Picked up 10 bottles.

Where I live, Macallan Sherry was hard to find other than old stock. Right now both Macallan Sherry and Double Cask are hovering around ~$75. Unfortunately my Costco hasn't sold Macallan since last 7-8 years.

Among all the single malts including Kirkland 18, I love the taste of Macallan 12.

Surprisingly, Macallan double cask 12 was sitting next to sherry cask 12 for higher price. I still don't understand the reason sherry cask was priced at $53 and how did Costco got their hands on it.

I purchased this same bottle years ago on a similar deal. Let's just say it has aged another three years since I bought it. Not a comment on the quality of this bottle, but I am just more of a highland and islay fan myself. It is damn smooth though.
Lol. That's not how alcohol ages.

Not in Atlanta for anyone that might be interested here.

Went to what I believe is the single Costco with a liquor store (Perimeter) today and they don't have it now, nor have they ever according to the manager.
Thanks for saving me a trip. FYI, Alpharetta also has a liquor store. Those are the only two in GA.

I bought two bottles yesterday (Everett, MA) and I'm doing a taste test to appease the feverish SD mob. I would say, it is not as smooth as most other 18 year single malts that I've tried. The consistency is a little bit more syrup-y than I prefer. But it has a nice warmth and the sherry cask definitely is very forward, if you're into that. I would say that this scotch is a good deal, not a great deal and not a bad one either. As reference, I do usually like the more peaty scotches (Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Laphroaig, my favorite is a Glenfiddich vintage cask collection). I am not a huge fan of sherry casks (i.e. Kavalan Soloist), having said that, I would still put them above a more straightforward scotch like a Macallan 12. Conclusion: I would put this just a smidge below a Lagavulin 16, deal wise, when they used to go on sale at Costco.

Costco in Edison NJ has cases
Any Kirkland bourbon? Looked a few times for the Kikrland bourbon and haven't seen it in Edison.

You're comparing johnnie a blended scotch to a single malt?

Yes and only, because it's a recognized name in the scotch market that is mainstream and most people know. And although it's a blended scotch it drinks like a single malt.

This drinks like a bottle 3-5 times the cost. I always try to keep a bottle in my bar, even though my tastes shifted to bourbon.

Howdy neighbor!! ( Grapevine )

I wish Costcos in TX could sell their branded ( or re-branded as it were ) scotch! Stupid liquor laws here..
Yes. I split time between Seattle and Austin. The stupid high liquor taxes of WA and the various oddities of laws and availability of TX. Apparently I'm in the best of both worlds!! 😂

I've never had it but considering their wines are fantastic I bet its nearly on par with others.

Plenty in stock at my store west of Indianapolis. I'm close to the bottom of their $50 46% ABV sherry finished highland from 2019, so this is most welcome.
