With that being said - I've heard this speaker in person in the past, and while it would be a great speaker for a first time tower speaker user, please keep in mind that this is the Reference lineup, not the RP lineup. This speaker is also last generation, hence the sale.
If you can muster $500 or so for a pair of these speakers, keep shopping around for a pair of RP speakers from the same generation. You'll get a cleaner and more balanced sound. Klipsch did a pretty decent job on this generation's RP lineup for balancing out lows, mids and highs over their previous generations.
However, as mentioend - this is not an RP product, it's just reference. Only a tad better than their Synergy counterparts.
You can find a good set of RP speakers from this generation for roughly same cost if you wait for the deals to hit.
The sound we hear is completely subjective and when you add the cost of that difference, it becomes exponentially more complicated.
The R line is Klipsch's entry level line, the RP is the next level up.
IMO most people would agree the RP line would sound better, if they listened to them side by side.
Having heard both my impression, the main difference is the bright/harshness of them.
IF you prefer the sound of Klipsch but find them slightly too bright, the 8000's may be worth the extra cost.
I would disagree that you can EQ the R line to sound like the RP line.
Having heard both I would say most people would have a hard time distinguishing the difference between the R line & black label/synergy line if they listened to them side by side.

Not only are the synergy lineups using cheaper parts all around: enclosure, drivers, sub, etc... but they're literally built to put off a different sound than the reference lineup.
.
Spec to spec -different - synergy has lower sensitivity, narrower sound stage too.
Material to material - cheaper and less advanced parts than the reference lineup. Aluminum vs titanium drivers.
MSRP to MSRP - much cheaper MSRP than reference lineup.
Overall sound - not as bright, not as punchy or clear.
I think the general listener can surely find the difference in the sound that each lineup puts out.
Regardless, the synergy line up is their entry level speakers.

I do agree: general listener can surely find the difference in the sound that each lineup puts out.
In my experience the few times me and others have listened to them.
The difference was much smaller between the S vs R line, even to where some believed the S sounded better than the R line.
I don't recall anyone saying the same between R vs RP line.
