I buy plastic tipped shovels because they are better at scraping snow and ice off of cement and would rather spend $10 on a couple to get me through the winter than one with a metal tip that lasts years.
Scraping more snow and ice allows the sun to melt the remaining easier in my area which saves on salt.
I own a big beefy metal shovel that cost $45 years ago for shoveling snow in the street but those metal tipped plastic shovels that last longer are too much of a hassle in my midwest area.
Just dont put a lot of stress on the aluminum pole and you can avoid it snapping.
