They normally take a measurement of a large area, probably not great for capturing the temp of a 1/4in pipe.
The laser they often have on them are just there to point at things and make people misunderstanding how it works, resulting in the user using it wrong.
Also, there's no way to clamp it to a pipe.

They normally take a measurement of a large area, probably not great for capturing the temp of a 1/4in pipe.
The laser they often have on them are just there to point at things and make people misunderstanding how it works, resulting in the user using it wrong.
Also, there's no way to clamp it to a pipe.

A clamp thermocouple which works by surface contact is not affected by this sort of emissivity issues and would give a "truer" temperature. This is demonstrated later in the video:

Nice idea, but for brews it will have very few uses. Unless you have a legal distillation license, that is.
