Yes, previous gens had relatively small incremental improvements, but the 12th gen i3 got a big bump and really narrowed the gap between i3/i5/i7. Huge bump in efficiency too for the entire 12th gen line. Passmark scores:

Agree, this is decent but doesn't seem like a crazy good deal for the price. There have been several laptops over the past couple months with i3-1220p which is significantly faster for less, though I don't believe they had 16gb ram. If you can find something with a decent screen and i3-1220p or even i3-1215u, it would make sense to get that and pay a bit to upgrade ram (as long as it's not soldered) and ssd as needed, since those are super cheap nowadays. Any 12th gen i3/i5 would be a significant upgrade from an 11th gen.

Wait, an i3-1220p will be faster than an i7-1195G7? I haven't been following processors for a while - what's new in Gen 12 that makes even i3s so much faster??

I think that would make me crazy (ier).
And also not sure about the speckled bits everywhere, looks like bits of soda bottles or something.
