Take a screw driver and bend out the metal part where the batteries go. Make sure that your batteries snap in good and tight.

The Bluetooth connection is laggy and not reliable in my experience. Maybe it works well for others though. I've tried on both my desktop and a Shield connected to my home theater.

Does the firmware update actually make the bluetooth reliable?

I ended up buying the adapter years ago because the bluetooth connection was so unreliable and would drop constantly while playing.

Love the colors but modern controllers on all consoles go bad so fast. Just start drifting away.
I take care of my stuff too, I got perfectly working consoles from the 80's and 90's, no issues.
But these controllers, give or take 3 or so months, DRIIIIFT.
