IRS VITA and TCE Programs
The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals.
The VITA program has operated for over 50 years. VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including:
- People who generally make $60,000 or less
- Persons with disabilities; and
- Limited English-speaking taxpayers
My work supposedly paid E&Y to do my taxes for me free using their app/website but when I answered their questionnaire they tried telling me i needed to pay them 650…I assume due to minor crypto activity. That plus their site/questionnaire were pretty bad (eg they wanted me to tell them the number of 1099s i would enter instead of just letting me enter the info) so I declined. I usually use TurboTax or HR Block based on the deals from SD - but had seen others mention FreeTaxUSA so checked it out first this year.
I have to say I was impressed and filed my federal and 3 states using them this last weekend. It is just like TurboTax/HR Block and free to file fed return - 14.99 for state so for me it was $45 total to do taxes which is close to what I paid for TurboTax Deluxe last year (just for the software, not including the extra state fees).
They give the same PDF records just like TurboTax or HR Block and can ingest the same PDFs from last year to get started on return info. Highly likely I will use again.
Obligatory reminder that the whole reason you have to buy this software is because of lobbying by companies like Intuit that profit from making taxes more complicated. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/...ng-n736386
Use free tax USA instead of this. There's no need to pay for what should be free.
Not to mention they lobby to keep tax prep paid like this

Last minute online tt user. They offered me TT plus federal plus state efile for 29. Cheaper than paying someone plus the separate state efile charge. YOLO YMMV.
