True, and if you have a Menards near you (they're a regional big box hardware store in the Midwest akin to Lowes or Home Depot, for SDers in other areas of the country), they routinely have them around this price as well.

That said, we've had both the 1cu and 2cu versions for several years and we usr them all the time. Can't go wrong.

I doubt it. You'd want the older, borosilicate versions. It is Google-able, and also discussed here ad nauseum. Search SD fir "borosilicate" I would wager.

FWIW, this glass is heavy. It is also thick and the markings are on the outside, so measurement precision (as much as this is precise) becomes more difficult (at least, it is harder to maintain repeatability).

If you do not need specifically heat resistance, then I think the think plastic ones are better. Only problem is it is hard to find just a single 1-cup cup at the store.
