Yeah, it sure seems like we're getting very close to a consumer discretionary spending inflection point. You can only say "wait a minute, come on" so many times, before the wallet just finally closes. I think a lot of people will soon start closing their wallets. These shrinkflation type "deals" might motivate a couple people that absolutely need some bits, and a couple sockets to open their wallets, but for anyone else this is not a deal for $62.

I found a receipt from late 2020 (first COVID year) buying Diesel for $1.91. Last year I paid close to $6 (many stations were $6-$7). So yeah, anyway Exxon-Mobil record profits.

Meanwhile back on this set the price seems decent and not super-inflated (MSRP or whatever Amazon says, ignore). It's not "shrinkflated" as far as removing things that used to be there, given that the "shit bits" as some called them (driver bits and hex keys) have been a part of most multi-purpose tool sets for decades now. Even the classic Craftsman sets of the 1980s usually came with hex keys most of us already had, but it's true that in later years getting 40 driver bits was a new addition to bump up piece count, but that isn't recent.

Agree this might be a good set for a vehicle since it DOES include the "shit bits" that you just might need in a pinch (hey, I need a Torx bit to work on this thingie I didn't even know was there). So for an emergency kit this probably isn't bad. Since I have a larger pickup I'd supplement it with a tool bag with some 1/2" drive stuff with larger sockets, and also the things that are never included in sets like this, basic pliers, Vise-grip style pliers, Channel-lock style pliers, wire cutters, electrical tape, duct tape. With all that I think I'd be pretty good.

$40 for an almost complete 1/4 & 3/8 for mechanics and throw in some HF 3/8 deep and you're still under this.

FWIW I bought the 50 piece set a few years ago (3/8 drive, sockets plus handle & bits) as an impulse buy at TSC (I think I paid around $40 on sale, YMMV). Tools and box are good quality and I use them much, much more than I thought I would. Just right to grab & go when working outside the garage/away from my full set. Only complaint is the smaller sockets are hard to grab/remove from the case, especially with greasy or gloved hands.
