Most of the reviews look good but some point to some duds. I want to pull the trigger but I am wondering how Acer is on honoring their warranty and how much of a hassle is it. Can anyone comment?

I can't but I will say that the ACER predator I owned I loved and I had no issues with. Consider buying with a CHASE credit card that adds 1 year warranty to devices purchased.
"Benefit overview
Extends the time period of the U.S. manufacturer's warranty by one additional year, on eligible warranties of 3 years or less when item is purchased with an eligible Chase card or with rewards earned on an eligible Chase card"

I have an older Predator Helios with a GTX 1060 from 2018 or so. The earlier models were prone to overheating, but that doesn't seem to be as big of a concern with the new generation.
Mine overheated within the first month. Sent it back and they fixed it (not replaced) and reinforced the cooling system. From opening a ticket to getting my machine back, it took about 4 weeks. Still running strong today!

Bought an acer a few years ago. Fired it up and the cooling fan rattled. Emailed acer and they sent me a return shipping label. I "forgot" to include my charging cord with my return and it was no problem. I think they overnighted or 2-dayed the replacement.
If you want something pretty get a Macbook. On heavy performance machines I couldn't care less about bezels as long as they're built well and don't overheat.
Haven't visited the gaming scene in awhile. I'm too lazy to build - it seems like these gaming laptops with great specs are pretty much the same price as a lot of pre-built desktops with similar specs. Portability is nice, but not really a requirement. Will also add external cooler. Does anyone know if I can usually find equivalent spec desktops for significantly cheaper? Otherwise I will just pull the trigger on this... seems like a great deal. Thanks!

If you have a micro center near you, they can fix them in a few days normally under warranty.
I once owned a Acer monitor, worst nightmare to ask them honor the warranty. Had to pay out of pocket to ship it back and forth to CA. Sold it on Ebay and decided from then on NOT to own another Acer product for the rest of my life.

It's also FHD vs. QHD. Having said that, if you don't care about those things, ACER refurbs are legit so it could save someone some money.
