According to most reports M2 is 20% faster but it's disk access is 50% slower while the price is 33% more.

To get disk access on par with M1 you need to pay $200 to upgrade to 512gb ($799 or $699)

Recent mac's are not upgradeable in either ram or sdd unfortunately.

There's a slow SSD controversy on the M2 base models. The M1 base models have 2 SSDs while the M2 base models have only 1 SSD so there can be data bottlenecks.

Really considering doing this myself. Options I've used as a Plex server include the following: my primary desktop runs 24/7, an mITX AMD APU Build, or an older i5 Intel NUC. The primary desktop is an AMD 5950X monster with fast SSDs, and a 3090 for CUDA accelerated encoding, conversion, etc. But that requires it running 24/7. Not super efficient. The AMD mITX does well, but doesn't have Intel quicksync or CUDA capabilities. The NUC is pretty good, and very quiet and efficient, but I have repurposed them for other tasks right now. (HTPC upstairs, and one with an eGPU for a kids gaming PC). How would the M1 compare to the Intel NUC? I'm betting it can run 24/7 on less power, even under heavy use. Seems like a really good little Plex server PC for the money that can also function as a nice Mac computer in a pinch.

For all the doubters and haters about 8gb ram or 256gb ssd or Apple Silicon or even MacOS itself, I have a simple suggestion.

Just locate a Costco with stock, buy one at $399 and try it out. Odds are that the M1 architecture with MacOS will surprise you.

And if not, you have 90 days to return it at Costco.

At least then you will be able to comment on future forums with the authority that only comes from experience😊

I've had one of these for a couple of years. Very good fast machine. If you are worried about storage run a NAS or use an external device. This thing is a no brainer at this price.

Is this really something to care about for a $399 computer? Seriously? I don't know anyone with 3 monitors, but if I did I'd bet they aren't plugging them into entry level machines.

I would stick with using the NUC. Far simpler, just run you MM / HTPC stuff on that machine. Less complexity. Less stuff.

possibly. not with the hdmi port though. you'd have to use a TB port and it is highly dependent on the target display and cable/adapter used.

Edit: People are having success with a specific Cable Matters-brand TB>HDMI cable with the LG OLED C2's - check out the forums over on macrumors.
