A few months ago I made my first purchase from this website, based off glowing reviews from the commenters. Oddly enough, my first purchase was a bad hard drive! (Or maybe not odd and people here are just getting really lucky?) Inserting the hard drive just kept rebooting my system, and they told me to return it. The return process was really easy, however, and they really stood by their product. I felt confident enough that I got another hard drive after that incident and the new one has been working flawlessly.

Solid deal, thanks. I've bought so many of these over the past 6 months and had zero issues so far. I'll never shuck another WD drive again.

I bought 4 x 12TB from this seller about six weeks ago. Shipped fast. Packaged VERY WELL. No tax. And they're running great.

I work in IT and I have personally never seen Seagate in enterprise servers. I wonder who uses them
Every shop has their preferences. They also may be embedded inside servers. When I was in enterprise IT I never bothered to see who the SAS drive vendor was, I just bought the array.

Well. Who would fund a double-blind, statistically significant controlled study for hard drives?
You lost me when you started using Jargon (double blind) that is intended to compensate for human bias and not relevant to the discussion.

It won't matter as a home user. But whatever makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

If i have the choice,
I'll take a new drive, not a used one that's therefore closer to death..and I'll take a drive with .2% failure over one with 4.42% failure .
For $100 more.
i run over 100 drives and only had 2 die or develop bad sectors within 24 hours of using them

but whatever makes you feel better.. you still have to pay for shipping to WD or Seagate once your drive dies and they will just send you a recert anyway.

i saved over 4500.00 when i bought 30qty 18TB X18 during Black friday and have not an issue.

i will most likely sell these off in 2 years and replace them with 36TB once they are released.
Same thing goes for my 8TB CMR they need to go. I can easily replace them with 16s.

18TB has been overpriced for 2 years now. Soon we will be getting Nand HDDs that do 500MB/s

but like i said whatever you think makes you feel better. Id rather save the money towards something else

Many home users don't have the kind of storage needs that entail buying a NAS + 5x18TB drives. So we have to make compromises rather than spend $1500 on a serious storage solution.

Your advice would be more useful if you clarify what your assumptions and illustrating the pros and cons. Then even people who don't have the same needs could benefit from the parts of your advice that make sense to them.
already mentioned this many times and there is a ton of information on the internet and youtube about parity, synology NAS, qnap, true nas , or unraid.. You want parity for any hdd nowadays that is high capacity. you can even use windows storage spaces to make a raid 5 or 6
If you are personally unaware then you should probably do more research on the subject.

if you have one specific question I can answer it.

Don't know who downvoted your comment, but I concur. Also got 12TB a couple of months back and mine's also very noisy, which is OK as it is in a NAS in a closet where I can't hear it.
I got the same. They're in a HTPC about 10 feet from where I sit. The normally functioning refrigerator about 20 feet away is far louder. I almost never hear them.

i don't have an old desktop that has enough bays to hold them, only some old laptops. i'll wait for a deal of a 2-bay qnap or something.
If you're going with a NAS forget qnap and buffalo, as much as I hate to say it synology is the best choice if you're not going freenas.

I've used them all over the past 15 years and although I am not a HUGE fan of Synology they do make a great product and offer free support (it sucks though). I use mine for Plex and file share with a simple 2 drive mirror, use cloud sync to back it up nightly to wasabi. The 718+ been flawless for nearly 3 years.

Another recommendation for software raid is the combo of SnapRAID and DrivePool. Works great for me. Runs on Windows.

I'd bet that drives that have been working for years would work more often out of the box than new drives. I've had more new drives fail than drives die after years of use.

any Mac tool to test them In USB dock station?
IIRC it may depend on the USB bridge used in the drive. Macs are weird about passing SMART data across USB. I found it hard to get a good answer on it. May also depend on your testing methodology.
Note also that Seagate is unusual in how the drives report some SMART attributes, like raw error counts.

You always buy two, three price is baked into the cake.
This right here. The attractive price is not for a single drive, unless you only need that as the cold backup for existing drives, ie completing the 3-2-1 rule. Just budget for multiple drives, or consider the inevitable catastrophic loss.
Also seems the anecdotes in question are from quite some time ago, so not sure "consistent" is the correct term here. From the webs you can here strong opinions about any maker, including WD. Don't trust any drive, and don't trust any system. I was hit with the Intel silicon degradation "bug" a few years ago. Could have lost the entire array due to a MB fault.

Why don't just use storage space ?

DrivePool is easier to use and much less susceptible to data loss. In storage spaces, data for one file is written across multiple disks. If you have an OS crash, you might not recover your storage spaces array. You can take any drive out of DrivePool and read all the data on it in any computer you install it in. You can also add SSD for a cache drive for DrivePool. It takes like zero time to add a drive to a pool in DrivePool.

Looking for home business solution.( I can do very well with 4TB storage too).

what's the best free software to auto clone (or backup) my work files during the day? I think I should be fine if it auto backs up every 12 hours. guidance needed.

Also, this one is similar quality too if 12TB option is enough? https://serverpartdeals.com/produ...tified-hdd
If it's Windows - Macrium Free or FreeFileSync would probably be my recommendations. But it depends what you're trying to do.
If it's only 4TB and for non-personal use, I'd be tempted to do cloud backup via iDrive or something.

Which one of those would be easiest to setup for an old man like me?
None are universally "easier" than the others IMO. Sometimes a distro will click with someone faster than others though. They also all have pros and cons.
I think OMV with Snapraid and mergerfs is ideal for me but may not be for everyone.

Anyone who says one thing is the answer for everyone is usually full of it.

What would you say is a good amount of storage for ripping DVDs and Blurays? I'm trying to get rid of clutter but would like to rip my collection.

Would 18-36tb be a good starting point?
Yes, I have 28TB, used for 4Ks and Blu Ray, non-compressed.
