A few months ago I made my first purchase from this website, based off glowing reviews from the commenters. Oddly enough, my first purchase was a bad hard drive! (Or maybe not odd and people here are just getting really lucky?) Inserting the hard drive just kept rebooting my system, and they told me to return it. The return process was really easy, however, and they really stood by their product. I felt confident enough that I got another hard drive after that incident and the new one has been working flawlessly.

I don't mean to shill for anyone, just am a genuinely satisfied customer and I think it's a great solution for a variety of situations.

There is alot of Kiddos who work for Best Buy and like to be called that even though they are adults.
They feel it takes away any responsibility they have to customers. I would avoid all costs buying hard drives at best buy

Is there a reason why you did not just build an Unraid Server? You can do the same upgrading your hdds

Tempting but after inspecting my cache of old drives its blatantly clear I have a bunch of old WD drives and not a single living Seagate. Had two 3tb drives die in the last 60 days, both Seagate. Their stuff just doesn't hold up for me. Not sure if its the heat of where I live that degrades them over time.

That's funny. I recently retired a Seagate Barracuda 500GB drive that I bought in Aug 2007. It has been in continuous use for 16 years. Never had any problems or any bad SMART reports.

The only reason it got retired was to replace it with a larger drive.

In that same time period, I had two of three WD black drives fail.

I actually moved from Unraid to DrivePool. Don't know if my experience is even relevant as both have evolved significantly since then. I've had some bad experiences and had my butt saved by both. A few years ago, I simulated a drive failure, compared them and a couple other options side-by-side, and concluded that DrivePool (plus Scanner, another app from the same company) made it significantly harder to screw up in the first place, and significantly easier to recover when something does go wrong.

I don't know if DrivePool is still a competitive solution but FWIW when I switched to it, my life got generally easier, and despite three drive failures I haven't lost any data since. Hope it helps.

That code is for new customers only I would not abuse it for warranty purposes. I am waiting for the 20s to be under 200 . Should be soon as seagate is releasing 24 to 26 Tb cmr drives this year

I'm technically a new a customer.. been lurking but haven't bought anything yet. ..Wave

My 10 TB are still 80% full..

I'm glad i waited bc the the prices have drop a lot since the last time i replied to you.
.. still waiting for the x20..

I'm sure the wear on the the x20 would be have less than the x16 or x18.

once the the x 20 his $200 then I'll buy one ..

I am excited about the larger new 30 and 50 TB drive in the near feature..

I can still remember buying a new hard drive from Elec-tec for my kid when he went off to college.
$400 for a 200 MB drive.

Electec is long gone, and now $400 buys 36TB which is 36,000,000 MB.

Personally recommend Stablebit DrivePool as well, just less complex and less chance of user screw-ups. Bundled with their CloudDrive software, there can be surprisingly useful things you can do. IMHO a better solution for backups that don't require file systems to be 99.99% up=

I never had that kinda of money back then..

I'd always walked by the local Radio Shack and stare at the fancy Tandy , IBM machine.
I told my self that I'd save up enough to buy one. We were poor so that never happen.

I ended up scraping parts from a PC repair shop. My first hard drive was used and had known bad sectors. I really wanted to build a computer so I bought it and installed windows.

Spent hours and days learning how computers worked and function. I was hooked once i got the OS to work.
