Have both of these set and I have never ever used the Irwin tool. It's worthless it's big and bulky I recommend not buy it. Buy the socket set it's way bettter.

So how do these work? They have a square instead of hex bore, in all the various common tap sizes?

Yes, along with a bit of a round hole that the tap fits into very well.

Yep, the internal broaching at the bottom is a square, then round to help support the tap with an o-ring in the round part to help retain the tap.

Mostly just a handy way to hold the tap and secure enough it helps with keeping square on the first cuts.

Half the time I just use them as a handle on a tap, just depends what I'm doing.
