Folks - For an OS drive you won't be able to tell the difference between this and another that is 5000 or 7000 MB/s. This is 7 times faster than traditional SSDs which are around 500MB/s and still can barely tell the difference for boot drive between those unless you use a stop watch. You really need to be doing massive 4K editing and even then chances are the bottleneck will be in other areas. Source: I worked for several years in the OS building team of a company whose OS you are probably using.
That said there is the usual conundrum of someday being able to use the extra 1500 to 3500MB/s some day for an extra $20 to 50 but chances are by then it will make more sense to go with PCIe5 drives.
Misinformation!

I have the 1tb version of this and It's been working just fine as an OS drive. Desktop in seconds, at game menu in less than a minute from shutdown to steam start-up and finally launching the game.

Updates don't take forever. Apps open fast.
There are numerous versions of this drive. So it's hard to know what you'll get based on other's reviews.

I have this 2tb drive. Feels almost as fast as my Samsung 980 pro 2tb. People hate on QLC and no dram, I don't know why. I've never had any nvme fail before. Side by side, I bet a lot of people wouldn't notice any difference.

Seems to be below the required speeds, and PS5 will tell you this after install, but it will work anyways. Some snapshots from reviews on Amazon.

1) "Coming in at around 3200mb/s it doesn't reach the full PS5 speed requirements, but it is recognised and allowed to be used by the console thanks to its pci-e gen4 spec."

2) "Read online that this would work in the PS5 so I thought I'd give it a go.

PS5 complained it wasn't fast enough when I installed it but let me use it anyway.

Horizon Forbidden West, Doom Eternal and Borderlands 3 tested so far with no issues in performance or loading speed."

3) "Bought this for use in a PS5, while it's below the required speed, it will still work since all the PS5 needs is pcie gen 4.

I tested it out with several PS5 games, including Elden Ring, Miles Morales, Tales of Arise, Forbidden West, etc. and they all loaded up in the same time as the internal drive to the eye test.

Overall, I recommend it if you're looking to increase your storage on a budget and don't want to spend the extra cash."

PS5's PCIe 4.0 requirement and the high throughtput numbers they claim to 'require' really put them into an elite console camp, and is the greatest innovation Japanese hightech industry came up in recent 10 years Wink

from toms':

"The 2TB Kingston NV2 is a dirt cheap NVMe SSD and not much more. Performance is fairly bad, the drive runs hot, and you cannot be certain of the hardware. It makes for a cheap secondary drive but is not ideal for laptops or for use as a primary drive."

For t$10 cheaper (newegg/ebay), the intel 670p is a far better drive,.

Good price, but slow for a PCIe 4 drive. No dram, and QLC. Not good for an OS drive.

It's fine for an os drive. The best? No. But still pretty damn fast.

While you are perfectly fine to provide your opinion without facts, I provided a source for eht independent review and I own a 670p and have been using it. The 670p is QLC WITH a DRAM cache which is unusual for a QLC drive, I suggest you provide a source as well for your opinion.

QLC technically only has ¼ of life SLC, enjoy the short life with very short life Intel SSD business

I see. You dislike and bash the intel 670p as better than the Kingston NV2. Yet since this thread is about the 2TB Kingston NV2, you dont comment that the Kingston NV2 also has the same QLC as the intel, but without DRAM. That makes zero sense.

From Tom's review of the Kingston:
"Four 512GB NAND modules with four 128GB dies deliver a total of 2TB. This is Intel's 144-layer QLC."

It's not just about speed, reliability and endurance is key. OS drives tend to have more writes than drives used for other purposes, and the consequences of having an OS drive go bad can be worse than for other drives. Personally I believe that scrimping on OS drives is false economy unless it's for a computer you don't care much about.

Works fine for the ps5. I have been using it since January. You will get a warning about the read speed but it still works. Very fast transfer rate between the main ssd and this.

however with the rate nvme is dropping, I recommend getting a faster drive for around $120.

It has been reported, 1TB version is SLC, 2TB becomes bad with QLC

The TBW is disconcertingly low at 640TBW for the 2TB drive. That's about half the endurance of what a decent drive should have.
