Yes, mods certainly can break games, but I'm a fan of playing games* with dozens of mods installed anyway. (* Especially for XCOM: EW, XCOM 2: WOTC, Fallout 3, Fallout NV, and Fallout 4.)

This game has Steam Workshop enabled, so it makes finding and installing mods really easy. A 3rd party mod launcher is much less needed than for other games. (For other games NexusMods.com is a great resource.)

My game broke going up the elevator to the final boss fight - but I was unmodded- had to fix with hex editing iirc

Does it say anywhere how long this deal is going to last? I would prefer to buy through Steam if it will be the same price and the Steam sale starts in 4 days. Nothing against GMG, but buying during Steam sales gets you a card you can sell for 3 cents on the marketplace!

I tried to mod XCOM 1 for god knows how long to run in 21:9, never worked, enraging

I think he meant buy it literally through the Steam store instead of a third party because during some sales Steam will give you a seasonal sale "card" that you can sell for a few cents in the community marketplace. You don't get that small bonus if you buy outside of Steam.
