Expect to wait a really long time to get privacy for these sized trees. I bought 6' tall ones 3 years ago, planted them 4 ft apart as recommended and still not even close to a privacy fence. They are close to 12ft tall now. Probably 2 more years I'm guessing it'll take to get complete privacy. So for these 1-2' ones, I'm guessing it would take 7-10 years probably.

The trees definitely grow height wise quickly, the issue is they are much thinner on top, so you do get privacy 4 ft or lower when they're 10 feet tall, but wide open spaces on everything above 4 ft high. I'm in NY btw so ymmv

if you want a healthy, strong growing tree that wont be semi stunted for the first couple years, buy local. trees grown in california are going to take a while to adjust to growing in the northeast, etc. high mortality rate, etc. price looks good till you factor in all of that.

I planted 20 - 5' arborvitae from costco in 2010 and they make a thick fence now. I lost 2 along the way, but have filled in the gaps. At the time, they were $20 each, now I believe they are $30, and you have to get them quick, because they sell out fast.

these aren't the common arborvitae

Thuja Green Giant – Because it has genes from the Redcedar, this plant is resistant to deer.

Would these grow in a (very large) container?
Did you notice the 'giant' in the name? Wink This the largest widely available variety of thuja, topping out at like 60 feet at full maturity. Look for a smaller variety.

How far apart should these be placed for decent privacy in 5-10 years? The listing says 8-14 ft in between centers, but that seems like a pretty big gap.
Most sites I've seen suggest 5-6 feet for a privacy hedge.

Arbovitae are some of the slowest growing trees out there. During peak growth perhaps 12 inches/year max. So everyone will need to ask themselves... Is it really worth the wait?
I mean they eventually do become giants whether you start here or 6'; would never fly with my HOA where I'd like to put them. Thinking on Emerald Greens for years tho a lot of deer around here.

From personal experience, these don't survive in North Texas regardless of what the map says. Yes, bought them at Walmart -- 4 to 6 feet tall for around $40 each a few years ago.
I bought 8 from Michigan bulbs in 2019, same size and about 3 died and I replaced them but the ones that survived are only 3-5 feet now. I don't have irrigation so the ones that died wasn't receiving much water, if any for months, and I'm in Houston.

Summer 2017, started at 3ft i believe to now -- SE Michigan. Probably about 6-8 ft worth of growth.

edit: i do have deer coming through the backyard, but they left green giants alone.

If you have deer in your area these will get destroyed if you don't have a cage. They love these

Lately Costco has had the emerald green around me, which might top out approaching 15' depending on conditions. I've not seen green giants there yet. And they do sellout fast. The emerald greens that show up at Costco in the spring have been successful for me as well, started out at 3-4' and about $30. They're still alive and healthy.

Arborvitae = Deer Food
I realize this variety is irresistant, but when the ground is covered with snow and there's nothing else to eat, The deer will enjoy these as well.
it's frustrating to watch these grow for years and then get hit with one hard winter and poof.
I use deep repellent spray. Smells terrible, but seems to keep them away. They definitely love them.

FYI for those with expectations that this will grow and become your fence within 5 years. I had taller ones (maybe 2-3 ft?) planted 5 years ago, half of them that survived (yes, they die) are now only 5 ft at maximum. I'm in Northern VA area, hardiness zone 7a.

These are tiny starter plants. But 3 3-gallons at HD or Lowes for the same price and plant these in the center of the area you want to block. Then take cuttings and when they take plant the cuttings to either side. They root super easy. They won't all be the same size, but continue to plant some staggered in front etc and you will have a fast growing naturalistic hedge in a few years. Emerald Green is a better choice for suburban yards and 3 gallons that were maybe 3 feet in the ground, 3 years later are 10-12 feet. You have to regularly water whenever its dry and fertilize to push the growth.

The trick with arborvitae's is water the crap out of them to make them grow faster!

Can one not just go down to walmart and buy these for $6 each?
No these are special. In southeast MI these do very well in the clay soil and sell out quickly at Lowes (1-3 days) at $29 each.

I have 15. In the first 4 years I wanted them to grow faster, in years 5-8 they growed over a foot in height and width every year. Now they are putting on well over 2 feet every year.
