Expect to wait a really long time to get privacy for these sized trees. I bought 6' tall ones 3 years ago, planted them 4 ft apart as recommended and still not even close to a privacy fence. They are close to 12ft tall now. Probably 2 more years I'm guessing it'll take to get complete privacy. So for these 1-2' ones, I'm guessing it would take 7-10 years probably.

The trees definitely grow height wise quickly, the issue is they are much thinner on top, so you do get privacy 4 ft or lower when they're 10 feet tall, but wide open spaces on everything above 4 ft high. I'm in NY btw so ymmv

if you want a healthy, strong growing tree that wont be semi stunted for the first couple years, buy local. trees grown in california are going to take a while to adjust to growing in the northeast, etc. high mortality rate, etc. price looks good till you factor in all of that.

I planted 20 - 5' arborvitae from costco in 2010 and they make a thick fence now. I lost 2 along the way, but have filled in the gaps. At the time, they were $20 each, now I believe they are $30, and you have to get them quick, because they sell out fast.

Arborvitae = Deer Food
I realize this variety is deer resistant, but when the ground is covered with snow and there's nothing else to eat, The deer will enjoy these as well.
it's frustrating to watch these grow for years and then get hit with one hard winter and poof.
These are worlds better than other varieties. I saw 9 young deer in my Dad's backyard (Iowa) and his four green giants are untouched

If you have deer in your area these will get destroyed if you don't have a cage. They love these

How bad are the roots, if I put them near a vinyl privacy fence will I have issues?
I transplanted seven foot one when I had a walnut tree removed after it was struck by lightning. The root ball was about 5-6' in diameter and about 2' thick. Not sure if this helps

$10/plant seems just sort of OK for such tiny little things.

I've been told that they aren't #1 on a deer's preference list but will eat them if they don't have anything else.

I had a row at my previous house, went many years without issues but one year up to ~ 6 feet was completely stripped. Once that happens the green doesn't come back,.

I purchased bare root stock that grew 1 foot the first year. I was so bummed. They grew 4 feet in the second year, and are now 30 foot tall with a 10 foot spread at the base. They block noise, and wind, and have a rich cedar aroma. Central Ohio.

I had the exact opposite experience. Deer and bagworms left mine alone.

I am no landscape expert but first thing you would want to know if the plant you are interested in is for your zone.

If you don't know your zone, check out this link:

If you live in the midwest, do not plant these around your vehicles. The sap is hard to get off. Luckily the bag worms took out most of them last year. If you have this problem, Goo Gone is the best to remove it.

These will grow 1-2ft per year. I would say closer to a foot per year. With fertilizer 2ft at most. They grow out quit a bit as well in the first several years. They are fast growers but not what some have said here.
