Expect to wait a really long time to get privacy for these sized trees. I bought 6' tall ones 3 years ago, planted them 4 ft apart as recommended and still not even close to a privacy fence. They are close to 12ft tall now. Probably 2 more years I'm guessing it'll take to get complete privacy. So for these 1-2' ones, I'm guessing it would take 7-10 years probably.

The trees definitely grow height wise quickly, the issue is they are much thinner on top, so you do get privacy 4 ft or lower when they're 10 feet tall, but wide open spaces on everything above 4 ft high. I'm in NY btw so ymmv

if you want a healthy, strong growing tree that wont be semi stunted for the first couple years, buy local. trees grown in california are going to take a while to adjust to growing in the northeast, etc. high mortality rate, etc. price looks good till you factor in all of that.

I planted 20 - 5' arborvitae from costco in 2010 and they make a thick fence now. I lost 2 along the way, but have filled in the gaps. At the time, they were $20 each, now I believe they are $30, and you have to get them quick, because they sell out fast.

No one's commented on when you should plant these… I'm assuming for northeast it's way too early as it's still snowing in some parts. So you would keep these in their containers indoors for a few months?
I got mine from Costco in 2020. Planted them the first week of may. May 9th it snowed. They are still growing strong. I'm in NY

Ya I'll probably wait around May to plant these. They're coming March 20th so that kinda sucks.

I am in Colorado (about 4500 feet) and bought 5 of these that were 4-5'. Planted them in early summer to allow them to establish before winter. Woke up to a very wet early November snow which ripped off huge amounts of branches on each plant. None of them made it through the winter. It it a good idea to see which zone you are in before purchasing.

At a minimum you need to buy trees that are already like 5 feet tall or you will be waiting a long long time. Also Arbor Vitae are trash, still remember years ago I paid for Austrian Pines and the landscaper thought he was slick and planted Arbor Vitae, had to come back and replace them with the right trees.

More or less. Recommendation is to plant them in a zig-zagging pattern. So you end up with two rows. First row would have a 4 foot gap between each tree, then the second row would be in that gap still 4 feet apart. 2-3 feet between each row.

Not true with the thuja green giants - the deer ignore them. I have 20 of these in a row that grew to over 25' tall in 12 years and have tons of deer - who have never touched these trees. Note - the trees I planted started at 5-6' not 1-2' - these trees tend not to do much for 1-3 years then grow rapidly.

Arborvitae = Deer Food
I realize this variety is deer resistant, but when the ground is covered with snow and there's nothing else to eat, The deer will enjoy these as well.
it's frustrating to watch these grow for years and then get hit with one hard winter and poof.

I see you got the costco patio cover also, how's that been working out for you? I've been thinking about getting it for my uncovered slab for years. How was assembly and all that?

THIS!! ^^
Was just telling a couple at Costco last night this same thing. The hubby joked that the tomato plants the wife grabbed are going to be her next victims. I told him that it's not her fault. Costco grows them in milder climates than our own, and when they are planted here in Phx, the climate shock kills them easier than if they bought something that had always been in the local climate. Esp true for something like tomatoes, which are very difficult to grow in the low desert. I've never had a plant survive that I've bought at Costco. (Home Depot does similarly. Buy from a local tree farm).

Many of you buying these are in a hurry for tall trees for privacy, but you should always select your plants with the mature size in mind and make sure you have room. Our neighbor planted about 20 of these along the fence to our south in the '90's when they were only about 5'. Now they're full grown so around 40' tall, blocking sunlight in all our south-facing windows and blocking our solar panels. The neighbor regrets planting them, but can't afford to remove them.

Anyone have a good suggestion for a privacy tree/plant for low light areas?
Southwest Virginia, backyard is mostly shaded however. Deer not an issue - just would like a low maintenance something that will grow in lower light. Been overwhelmed trying to figure out on own.

We are located in "7a" - average annual extreme 0-5:

Could be a steal if your town has a "cut down a tree, replace it/plant a tree (or 2 or 3)" ordinance.
