Expect to wait a really long time to get privacy for these sized trees. I bought 6' tall ones 3 years ago, planted them 4 ft apart as recommended and still not even close to a privacy fence. They are close to 12ft tall now. Probably 2 more years I'm guessing it'll take to get complete privacy. So for these 1-2' ones, I'm guessing it would take 7-10 years probably.

The trees definitely grow height wise quickly, the issue is they are much thinner on top, so you do get privacy 4 ft or lower when they're 10 feet tall, but wide open spaces on everything above 4 ft high. I'm in NY btw so ymmv

if you want a healthy, strong growing tree that wont be semi stunted for the first couple years, buy local. trees grown in california are going to take a while to adjust to growing in the northeast, etc. high mortality rate, etc. price looks good till you factor in all of that.

I planted 20 - 5' arborvitae from costco in 2010 and they make a thick fence now. I lost 2 along the way, but have filled in the gaps. At the time, they were $20 each, now I believe they are $30, and you have to get them quick, because they sell out fast.

Doesn't Costco only do price adjustments within 30 days of original purchase?
Technically yes. That's when I approach CS and tell them that I've noticed the price has dropped, so I can go haul a gazebo to the register, buy it, then immediately return it, and how that's basically stupid and wastes all sorts of time and effort, and they will usually do a purely electronic buy/return for me, which has the net effect of being a price adjustment.

This will be unpopular, but tree fences look tacky.

Sorry.

This whole thread makes me so happy I haven't done anything related to landscaping for 15 years.

People will buy these, dig a 6 inch wide hole in hard clay, dump them in, never water them, and then return 50% of them dead while complaining about the other 50% not growing at 3 feet a year.

lmao.

Like most evergreens, these guys will not do well in Florida- if the soil is too wet for too long, they will get root rot and die. Dropped a grand on these from a SC based nursery. All dead within 2 years.

They're shipping from Florida… that's what my tracking says.

That doesn't mean they will grow well in Florida soil. They are of course grown in planters, so the conditions of the local area are less-pertinent.
