Explain me specifically why a multi billion dollar company is indefensible and owes everyone something.

Bonehead azzhole behavior like that causes retailers to change their return policy. They are forced to make their return policy more restrictive, and that impacts honest people. Multi billion dollar companies don't absorb the cost. They pass on the cost to every other consumer.

Samsonite products quality getting really terrible. Customer support was also virtually non-existent. I bought one when it was posted on sale on Slickdeals. Never used it until a few months later, past the return deadline. Opened and found that the strap was broken. Submitted request to get it replaced. The agent sent the typical copy paste answer, then when I replied, just never replied me again. Non-existent support, quality getting worse and worse.

Used to be a huge fan of Samsonite, now quality and support has really gone downhill.

Maybe I was just unlucky with this and others have good experience with them, but multiple of my friends have feedbacked similar things in recent years. At the end of the day, do your own research and buy at your own risk.

That's why I just buy them at Sam's Club and return them after the trip.

This one is Overall Dimensions: 22.5" x 15.5"x 9.5" (47.5)
Isn't carry on 22x9x14 (45) at the most ?
" Though you might find an inch or two of a difference with various airlines, the standard domestic carry-on luggage size is 22" x 14" x 9", which includes the handle and the wheels. This size limit ensures your bag — and ideally everyone else's — will be able to be stored safely in the overhead bin for your flight."

I think you get what you pay for like with anything these days. The brand name doesn't seem to matter anymore because 'premium' brands are putting out low quality versions of their products to compete with the budget brands. Sometimes they'll inflate the regular price to make it seem premium still but then have it perpetually on sale. This is why I just seek out a lot of reviews to get a feel for others experiences before pulling the trigger no matter the brand name.

I really just need a reliable soft carry-on luggage piece... does such a thing exist? I'm going to have spinal surgery soon, so I might prefer a spinner type, but I am not picky. I know there are very cheap ones I could get at local home good stores, but I don't expect I'd get much life out of them

While he is definitely not a saint, I wouldn't say he is committing a fraud in this case. He is abusing the return policy would be more appropriate thing to say.
If you buy with the intent to use it and return it, that can easily be considered retail fraud. REI used to have an exceptionally generous lifetime return policy, but people abusing it, like the above example but even worse (using hiking shoes for a year+ and then returning them!), caused them to revoke that generous policy. Sam's could very well do the same thing. REI is not the culprit in that case.

I can't speak for the customer service, but what I noticed recently at their outlet store is that they definitely have different grades of quality. Essentially, you get what you pay for, but they do still have top-notch quality luggage lines. They've apparently diluted their image of quality with some budget offerings, probably to stem the tide of market share loss to cheaper competitors.

We just bought a suitcase from them that was middle-of-the-road in terms of price, and it's well made -- definitely a step above the no-name rollers out there. When we were looking, however, we almost bought a cheaper one, until I noticed where they cut corners with the wheels, the handle, and the overall construction.

No idea where this one fits, but the price would indicate toward the lower end of their lines.
