It's good, but nowhere on the same level as Dark Matter or Recursion (or Wayward Pines for that matter). Both of those balance out the action and cerebral elements better, Upgrade leans more into the action elements.
Just my opinion of course. Still worth the read though.

Agree, this book was a dissapointment after Dark Matter and Recursion. I didn't like Wayward Pines, it had too many logical and technical inconsistencies, I felt cheated.
Only SciFi Goodreads 2022 winner that I really liked so far. Suggest reading Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang after, interesting how one of the stories in the Chiang book is similar. I got both from Libby.

Couldn't have said it better. I was so excited for this one after loving Dark Matter and Recursion so much. And while a 'fun' read for sure, I enjoyed the others much more.
