Steam Deck is without a doubt the best tech purchase I've made in a long time.

If you are somewhat tech savvy I recommend the 64GB model paired with a 512GB or 1TB micro SD card. You can always upgrade the internal SSD if necessary. The issue with the 64GB is shaders must be stored on internal drive, not SD card, so between the OS and shaders the drive fills up fast.

If you don't feel like messing with opening the deck up, go for the 256GB model paired with a 1TB micro SD card.

The 512GB model only worth it for anti glare screen if you feel like you'll be playing it often outside.

Some must have programs for deck:

Decky loader - plugin manager for themes, power tools, and much more

EmuDeck- old school games emulation

Steam Rom Manager - adds your emulation game to steam, categorized by system with full game box and cover art

I also highly recommended a 45w power bank, the decks biggest weakness is battery life, you'll want a battery pack for travel

Be aware not all games run out of the box. Some require tweaking or custom proton versions to run properly.

ProtonDB.com lists game compatibility for all games and is a great resource, it's also a plug-in for decky

It has not. The company has stated very recently there is not a new version coming anytime soon. Stop spreading BS

There is only one m.2 slot so you'll remove the 64gb ssd and change it with a 1tb ssd. There are walkthroughs on youtube and from Valve on how to replace it.

I'm confident I can change the drive. Does the anti glare on the 512 make any difference between the models?
The screen makes a difference. Some like the anti glare others say it takes away from image quality.

I got the 64gig and upgraded it to 1tb.

I've been blown away by my deck and still feel like I'm barely scratching the surface of it. Amazing emulation capabilities and powerful enough to run games like Elden Ring (just beat it for the first time this week after exclusively playing it on the deck for 115h). Feels like it's the next handhelds.

That's what I did.

Bought a 512GB NVME on eBay for like $50-60. Once I got that, the install took 20 minutes. Big issue and time spent was popping the back casing. Make sure to use a credit card or something similar so you don't break it.

Also make sure to unplug the battery connector. Those who don't may get a newly bricked Steam Deck.
And don't forget to remove the micro sdcard

Windows support with the controller is janky though. It sucks
Feel free to share your own way of playing game pass games on the steam deck.

Word of warning to anyone who is planning to use 1tb sd cards. I've had 2 separate Steam Decks brick 2 separate 1tb cards from errors downloading games. These were 2 confirmed legit SanDisk cards. I have switched to a 512gb card and had no issues. I don't think Steam Deck plays nice with 1tb+ cards.
I've had no such issues with my two sandisk 1tb cards.

You can install windows on it, that way you can play your gamepass games, I'm sure theres a way to get it to work through linux as well but I dont use gamepass so idk
Gamepass can only be installed via windows but gamepass cloud can be installed to steamos.

I've had my steam deck since launch(512gb model), besides the loud fan which is fixed. My gripes with it is how HUGE it is. I mean this thing ain't take it anywhere... I rather grab my switch lite most of time time if I want to throw something in my bag for a quick trip.

With that said it's a good machine... just be aware how large the thing is. It sits in my desk drawer rarely used.. it was a impulse buy so... lol.

Great, I should have gotten more funds last time I was getting Steam GCs at a 20% discount. I'm $110 short (at current price) and now I'm debating if I should wait for next GC sale or just go for it
For $22 in savings I'd say get it now.

Gotta love Jen Psaki.
I miss her so much! She'd constantly place the conspiracy theorists in their place.

It's about time these went on sale. 10% would cover the tax for me, but I can't imagine ever being able to use this. I am not traveling at this time, so not a clue when I'd use it. If I wanted to play games, I could just hop on over to my PC.

Perhaps I am not the target audience for this type of device.

I prefer this to my switch oled but it's in a different size league from the switch lite which is still my preferred on the go console.

Your second link only links to other sites that did testing. Why not just link to those sites directly? The links go to YouTube videos that show nvme consistently equal to or faster than micro SD.
The first link shows marked performance improvements when loading from nvme.

Man, I am really tempted to buy this so I can not play all the games I currently have in my ridiculous backlog while on the go.
