Steam Deck is without a doubt the best tech purchase I've made in a long time.

If you are somewhat tech savvy I recommend the 64GB model paired with a 512GB or 1TB micro SD card. You can always upgrade the internal SSD if necessary. The issue with the 64GB is shaders must be stored on internal drive, not SD card, so between the OS and shaders the drive fills up fast.

If you don't feel like messing with opening the deck up, go for the 256GB model paired with a 1TB micro SD card.

The 512GB model only worth it for anti glare screen if you feel like you'll be playing it often outside.

Some must have programs for deck:

Decky loader - plugin manager for themes, power tools, and much more

EmuDeck- old school games emulation

Steam Rom Manager - adds your emulation game to steam, categorized by system with full game box and cover art

I also highly recommended a 45w power bank, the decks biggest weakness is battery life, you'll want a battery pack for travel

Be aware not all games run out of the box. Some require tweaking or custom proton versions to run properly.

ProtonDB.com lists game compatibility for all games and is a great resource, it's also a plug-in for decky

It has not. The company has stated very recently there is not a new version coming anytime soon. Stop spreading BS

There is only one m.2 slot so you'll remove the 64gb ssd and change it with a 1tb ssd. There are walkthroughs on youtube and from Valve on how to replace it.

I miss her so much! She'd constantly place the conspiracy theorists in their place.

It's about time these went on sale. 10% would cover the tax for me, but I can't imagine ever being able to use this. I am not traveling at this time, so not a clue when I'd use it. If I wanted to play games, I could just hop on over to my PC.

Perhaps I am not the target audience for this type of device.
It's really for people who want to play pc games on a console like device on a TV or handheld. If you don't need portable and already play pc games comfortably then it may not be a big value add for you.

Man, if it shipped faster I would have impulse bought it before some travel.

As an adult in his mid life, this has been the most exciting thing in gaming since the PSP. The catalog of legacy games is huge and you can get so many games under $5-$10 on cdkey web sites and quarterly steam sales. The community is growing and getting savvy - tons of tutorials for optimizations, windows dual boot, and emulation.

In the end, it plays pretty much everything you throw at it.

My biggest gripe is the Steam DRM: not every game plays nice offline. So, make sure you've done your homework before hopping on a flight. I've gotten screwed a couple of times!
We must be on the same old boat Smilie I've owned every console hand-held from Nintendo Gameboy to Sony PS vita. I want the Steam deck but I know it's a loss cause since I have like 500+ unplayed games backlog and no time due to family obligations. Glad you can find time gaming.

What is the lag time like on wireless? It might be good for simple games, but for mobas or fighting games, I think it might be a bit problematic on a TV

64gb version, buy a 1TB 2230 from Microcenter store $129 or online $159
Add another 512gb microsd for $30 on a sale from Amazon and you have more storage than what the 512gb version offers

Great deal especially for the 64GB model. I just purchased one on 3/14 so I emailed Valve asking to honor the price difference
Did they give too you?
I just received mine yesterday

I use ethernet connection when connecting to my TV. I can't speak to online multiplayer or internet lag as I don't tend to play online multiplayer games.

I only just ordered my deck on 3/14 and my deck hasn't shipped yet. I suspect I will hear back about a partial credit tomorrow

1TB + 1TB for the win!

I stupidly bought the 512GB so I can't justify spending so much to upgrade to 1TB internal.

Do you know what speculated means? People speculate about new iPhones years before release.

I bought one. Have some questions if you folks wouldn't mind:
  1. Any requirements for the ssd?
  2. Will replacing the storage void any warranty?
  3. if I install a new ssd will it be a secondary drive or will the OS need to be reinstalled?
