Steam Deck is without a doubt the best tech purchase I've made in a long time.

If you are somewhat tech savvy I recommend the 64GB model paired with a 512GB or 1TB micro SD card. You can always upgrade the internal SSD if necessary. The issue with the 64GB is shaders must be stored on internal drive, not SD card, so between the OS and shaders the drive fills up fast.

If you don't feel like messing with opening the deck up, go for the 256GB model paired with a 1TB micro SD card.

The 512GB model only worth it for anti glare screen if you feel like you'll be playing it often outside.

Some must have programs for deck:

Decky loader - plugin manager for themes, power tools, and much more

EmuDeck- old school games emulation

Steam Rom Manager - adds your emulation game to steam, categorized by system with full game box and cover art

I also highly recommended a 45w power bank, the decks biggest weakness is battery life, you'll want a battery pack for travel

Be aware not all games run out of the box. Some require tweaking or custom proton versions to run properly.

ProtonDB.com lists game compatibility for all games and is a great resource, it's also a plug-in for decky

It has not. The company has stated very recently there is not a new version coming anytime soon. Stop spreading BS

There is only one m.2 slot so you'll remove the 64gb ssd and change it with a 1tb ssd. There are walkthroughs on youtube and from Valve on how to replace it.

Do you know what speculated means? People speculate about new iPhones years before release.
Who specifically?
It's absurd to remain so vague when making such newsworthy or outrageous assertions (even if in the form of asking questions). Otherwise you could say anything. People are saying the earth is flat. People are saying that Elvis is alive.

What's the biggest size micro sd card it will take?
It will accept any card size that currently exists on the market (up to 1TB). I believe it's capable of greater sizes but those cards don't exist.

I got steam deck and I do like it. What I don't like is the sheer size of this thing. If I'm buying today, I would seriously consider Ayaneo 2 Pro but I understand that costs way more.

I would just get the 64gb model and upgrade it yourself. Either an external 512gb microsd ($15-$30) or a 2230 1 tb card for about $118 incl tax in multiple places. Not difficult to install at all. All the plaudits for the steam deck are true. Really great device, especially with emudeck. Tons of fun
Where did you buy the 1TB 2230 for $118? Thanks

The 64GB one is the best deal, here are the upgrade instructions for a larger SSD: https://docs.google.com/document/...Rxd2M/edit

You can also just get a 512GB or 1TB microSD card, which is slightly slower but has good enough performance for all games. I own a 256GB model (the upgrade info hadn't been released yet) and store most of my games on the SD card. There's a software mod for btrfs that gives you about 30-40% additional space for most games at no cost with compression: for https://gitlab.com/popsulfr/steamos-btrfs

Love this thing, but I honestly never pick it up. I am not comfortable playing on train and getting stolen and at home I am on PC or PS5.

On the train a big issue is the elbow room required for the wide grip. If the train's tightly packed it can be a pain to play it.
Like people who type on their laptops during flights as if it's not annoying in like eight ways.

If you are computer savvy at all you can buy the 64GB version and upgrade the SSD to a bigger one. I am rocking a 1tb nvme in my 64GB model.
Where did you find a decently priced SSD small enough to fit? I keep looking for one, but that size is not readily available.

Good hardware for its time. Better devices are landing so 10% for a 1 year old tech is very weak sale.

I have been debating getting one of these since they were announced. I really like the idea of a portable that can play just about all my games. But I can't shake the idea that the size of it is not really that much smaller than a 14" gaming laptop, but with less power. Actually, after you factor in depth, the bulk/volume/weight seems to be pretty on par... Also, if you really want to game on this thing, you need to keep it plugged in (or the battery wont last too long on demanding titles). I think that detracts from the "portability" of it.

I bought one. Have some questions if you folks wouldn't mind:
  1. Any requirements for the ssd?
  2. Will replacing the storage void any warranty?
  3. if I install a new ssd will it be a secondary drive or will the OS need to be reinstalled?
1: It has to be a 2230 drive, theres plenty of them to choose from on Amazon, I opted for the 1TB sabrent drive

2: If you need warranty work you can just swap the stock drive back in and they will be none the wiser

3: There is only 1 slot for a drive so you will need to reinstall the OS, its super easy to do and only takes like 10min

Ditto. Rocking w/ the 512gb and still having extra room.

Agreed. I have one, but I don't play it much. I should probably update it and install some retro game stuff and maybe try Hogwarts Legacy on it. But the thing really is a chonk...and the 2-hour battery life for modern games kind of sucks.
