Steam Deck is without a doubt the best tech purchase I've made in a long time.

If you are somewhat tech savvy I recommend the 64GB model paired with a 512GB or 1TB micro SD card. You can always upgrade the internal SSD if necessary. The issue with the 64GB is shaders must be stored on internal drive, not SD card, so between the OS and shaders the drive fills up fast.

If you don't feel like messing with opening the deck up, go for the 256GB model paired with a 1TB micro SD card.

The 512GB model only worth it for anti glare screen if you feel like you'll be playing it often outside.

Some must have programs for deck:

Decky loader - plugin manager for themes, power tools, and much more

EmuDeck- old school games emulation

Steam Rom Manager - adds your emulation game to steam, categorized by system with full game box and cover art

I also highly recommended a 45w power bank, the decks biggest weakness is battery life, you'll want a battery pack for travel

Be aware not all games run out of the box. Some require tweaking or custom proton versions to run properly.

ProtonDB.com lists game compatibility for all games and is a great resource, it's also a plug-in for decky

It has not. The company has stated very recently there is not a new version coming anytime soon. Stop spreading BS

There is only one m.2 slot so you'll remove the 64gb ssd and change it with a 1tb ssd. There are walkthroughs on youtube and from Valve on how to replace it.

Dang. Wish I had waited. I've barely used mine. I'm such a homebody and rarely travel, it just sits there. Also, the screen isn't great. Should have spent the money elsewhere.

I love Valve and the idea of the Steam Deck and at this $ the value proposition is huge. Yet if you rarely travel like me then you might be better off spending that entertainment money on a better PC or GPU, I would have been.

Why do you recommend the 256? I'm trying to decide which to get.
Unless you are comfortable replacing the internal drive yourself, you can only install Shaders onto the internal drive and they do add up.

How is the screen on this? I have trouble playing gamepass cloud through my s22 ultra and razor controller. The screen is just too small. Is this an improvement on ability to see things on screen?
I played ark via game pass cloud gaming and had very little issues. Every once in a while things got pixelated and could be hard to see but it was never enough to deter me from playing. Even used my phone on hotspot mode to hop on during a road trip and it worked better than I expected, lagged jumping cell towers but understandably so.

Just another guy posting that I can't recommend this enough. You can also get steam gift cards from Costco or sam's for an additional 5% off. GameStop also lets you get steam gift cards for trade ins if you have any credit there

Nice to finally see a discount on these! Tempting, but they are just too bulky and the battery life too low for my taste. I have actually been more tempted by a Logitech G Cloud for just streaming games from my gaming PC at home via Steam Link. I would rarely use a portable gaming device outside the house and on the rare occasion I do the Switch Lite is just soo portable! All that aside, I cant wait to see what they come up with for the Steam Deck 2 someday! I bet thatll "be the one"!

Wonder How long it will take for the new zelda game to play well on the deck?
Just wondering it it will run out of the box. I pre ordered TOTK. If not on the deck, then on the PC.
BTW, i watched linus mod his, and I'm about to do the same.

If all you're wanting is cloud gaming, local streaming, and retro gaming, the G Cloud is amazing. Check out Retro Game Corps video on YouTube. The battery life is easily 10 hours on it too.

First sale it's had! I have one but honestly don't use it enough. I will say though that I added EmuDeck and some of my favorite games from the PS1, PS2 and a few other consoles and it's been a great emulator.

I recommend the 256GB model personally but of course up to you.

Link to EmuDeck for those wondering.

No point unless you're really shy about opening one up. You can upgrade to a decently fast small form factor 256gb ssd for less than $15 on Amazon.

Is 512gb a good value? How much storage should one upgrade to? 1tb or 2tb?
No. You might as well save your money for a 6800u device or a SD2 at that point. The $400 option is really the only good value model now.
