Steam Deck is without a doubt the best tech purchase I've made in a long time.

If you are somewhat tech savvy I recommend the 64GB model paired with a 512GB or 1TB micro SD card. You can always upgrade the internal SSD if necessary. The issue with the 64GB is shaders must be stored on internal drive, not SD card, so between the OS and shaders the drive fills up fast.

If you don't feel like messing with opening the deck up, go for the 256GB model paired with a 1TB micro SD card.

The 512GB model only worth it for anti glare screen if you feel like you'll be playing it often outside.

Some must have programs for deck:

Decky loader - plugin manager for themes, power tools, and much more

EmuDeck- old school games emulation

Steam Rom Manager - adds your emulation game to steam, categorized by system with full game box and cover art

I also highly recommended a 45w power bank, the decks biggest weakness is battery life, you'll want a battery pack for travel

Be aware not all games run out of the box. Some require tweaking or custom proton versions to run properly.

ProtonDB.com lists game compatibility for all games and is a great resource, it's also a plug-in for decky

It has not. The company has stated very recently there is not a new version coming anytime soon. Stop spreading BS

There is only one m.2 slot so you'll remove the 64gb ssd and change it with a 1tb ssd. There are walkthroughs on youtube and from Valve on how to replace it.

I'm on the fence about purchasing one, mostly because I don't have a lot of time to tinker anymore. How plug and play is this? If my Steam library mostly consists of games 3+ years old, should I expect darn good performance? How about alternative store front support?

Appreciate your reply (or anyone's feedback) in advance!
It's relatively straight forward, I've had very little issue using mine but I've only tried games that are known to be compatible

The hardest thing for me was getting emulators installed and that's a one and done kind of deal

will this sell out? Already made some other purchases. I will like a little more time to think about whether I need this now or in the future. Or stream with moonlight for AAA games. I don't have too much time to play in front of a desktop at home.

No, but the sale will end.

I know the sale date is until the end of the Steam Spring Sale on March 23rd at 10am Pacific. I don't see the wording, "or sale ends when a certain number of units are sold." So is it correct to assume the sale is is until the end of the Steam Spring Sale on March 23rd at 10am Pacific? I am hoping the sale doesn't end before march 23rd because a certain number of units allocated for the sale are all sold out. Thus ending the sale.

Anyone use this for pinball with the ALP (legends) machine?

How do better tables like Indiana Jones play? Is frame rate an issue?

Pinball FX recomends gtx 980 I think on a pc
Does this come close. Not a gamer, but have loved pinball since the 1979 KISS machine.
I plan on following this guide. You can get the Indiana Jones table through Pinball FX3, and it seems no issues with FX3 tables.

First sale it's had! I have one but honestly don't use it enough. I will say though that I added EmuDeck and some of my favorite games from the PS1, PS2 and a few other consoles and it's been a great emulator.

I recommend the 256GB model personally but of course up to you.

Link to EmuDeck for those wondering.

Buy the 64gb one and upgrade 1tb internal memory for less. (watch a youtube video).

If you're just playing Steam games, you should be more than fine. Games just work and the Steam Deck just works like any other handheld from Nintendo or Sony. It's by far the most plug-n-play of all the handheld x86 devices out there today. The most tweaking you'll have to do is graphics settings or controls (or TDP settings if you want to try and save some power). I moved from a GPD Win device and I also got really tired of tinkering around with settings and tiny menus/settings in Windows.

Has anyone compared the emmc (PCIe 2?) vs PCIe 2x lane and PCIe 4x lane speeds?

Is 512gb a good value? How much storage should one upgrade to? 1tb or 2tb?

Why don't you use much? You don't like?
I like it but I have a PS5 and the "ultimate" gaming pc (well almost haha) and just don't know what to use it for. My apartment is tiny (studio) so everything is within a few feet of each other so it's not like I would keep it in a room without a console or PC. I could take it to work but I'm generally too busy to play during a lunch or something like that.

Great deal. I had no regrets paying full price. At this price if you're a gamer, it's a no brainer. My Nintendo Switch has been collecting dust. I should probably pick up another one.
