Steam Deck is without a doubt the best tech purchase I've made in a long time.

If you are somewhat tech savvy I recommend the 64GB model paired with a 512GB or 1TB micro SD card. You can always upgrade the internal SSD if necessary. The issue with the 64GB is shaders must be stored on internal drive, not SD card, so between the OS and shaders the drive fills up fast.

If you don't feel like messing with opening the deck up, go for the 256GB model paired with a 1TB micro SD card.

The 512GB model only worth it for anti glare screen if you feel like you'll be playing it often outside.

Some must have programs for deck:

Decky loader - plugin manager for themes, power tools, and much more

EmuDeck- old school games emulation

Steam Rom Manager - adds your emulation game to steam, categorized by system with full game box and cover art

I also highly recommended a 45w power bank, the decks biggest weakness is battery life, you'll want a battery pack for travel

Be aware not all games run out of the box. Some require tweaking or custom proton versions to run properly.

ProtonDB.com lists game compatibility for all games and is a great resource, it's also a plug-in for decky

It has not. The company has stated very recently there is not a new version coming anytime soon. Stop spreading BS

There is only one m.2 slot so you'll remove the 64gb ssd and change it with a 1tb ssd. There are walkthroughs on youtube and from Valve on how to replace it.

Steam Deck is the best thing ever. It can emulate most including Switch. Valve doesn't lock down the device and you can do anything with it.
If you are a tinker/slightly tech savvy, you will have so much fun messing around with the OS.
Even if you are not a gamer, you can use it as a great desktop.

Slick deal, but at this rate, I'll wait for the SD2.
Valve already said Deck 2 won't be out for another 3 years or more. If you don't need and can wait that long, then yes

All right I got a question: if I rarely leave the house, is it better to play on my pc + TV, or on the steam deck?

I've got the 256gb with a 1tb microsd. I got it July of last year, and I love it. I dual boot with PopOS so I can have a full desktop experience, including a Win10 VM. Yes, you can do a lot on SteamOS side (which is what I use for gaming), but once you get into compiling or more advanced tasks, you need a traditional Linux distro. Strongly recommended!

I've had the 256GB Deck since launch. Even though I barely get time to use it, whenever I do it's an excellent experience. I was dual booting windows via SD card till recently (specifically for game pass use), but found that windows games weren't very smooth. Wasn't sure if it's because of the SD card and so partitioned the internal SSD this weekend. Many guides and YouTube videos out there. It was quite simple and didn't take much time. I'm hoping this will help. The deck now boots into windows by default but that's a small issue for having native access to game pass as well as steam os via the internal ssd.

If you have the highest tier of game pass, this thing is excellent as a companion to your console.

On another note - I'm amazed at how well this thing is engineered at this price point. I was recently looking at Ayaneo 2 reviews and even though that thing has impressive specs it's $1100. Steam deck gets about the same performance as that at 15W use. If the Ayaneo is used at 22W or higher it handily beats the deck in performance but at a battery life expense (despite having a larger battery). That just shows Valve engineers hit the balance between price, performance and battery life very well. Nothing wrong in getting the Ayaneo 2 if you can afford it, but for most people the steam deck would be the better buy.

If you are computer savvy at all you can buy the 64GB version and upgrade the SSD to a bigger one. I am rocking a 1tb nvme in my 64GB model.
Which brand 1tb did you get?

Many people want to compare this to a Switch, but I honestly believe it's better to compare this to an Xbox or Playstation console, except with a screen. Great Gamepass companion and a solid device if you don't mind tinkering with settings, internals and software.

Switch OLED screen/battery/size is a much better true portable device. It's also simpler to use and has the hybrid ability ready to go.

Steam Deck screen and battery life are unfortunate, but at this price point they did what they could and you have to respect that. Size is a bit bulky but you really don't want them messing with that too much if it messes with ergonomics. Version 2, if they can keep a similar price point, upgrade the screen to an OLED and get the battery to a decent level, will be a game changer.

At this price, if you are tech savvy and looking for a new toy to game on, this is a great device. Get the cheapest one, gut the HD and do as you please.

I'd also recommend steam deck utilities to increase the swap file size:
https://github.com/CryoByte33/ste...-utilities

for those that have the 64gb model and are haunted by shader cache sizes (which will absolutely happen if you have multiple games installed)..unfortunately, I don't have my deck with me and I can't remember what application I installed

Does anyone play MW2 at all? I know this game requires windows. I watched a few youtube videos and it seems like you can get a solid 60fps. This wouldn't be my primary way of playing the game, just when I travel.

FWIW, I originally bought the 64GB back in september last year. I upgraded it to a 256gb drive and have zero regrets.

Easily the best consumer electronic I've purchased in a decade.

I'd recommend looking at reddit /r/steamdeck for questions like that but also to get into the community. It does so much more than just games and you learn something new and exciting every time you check it out.

It is available in Europe AFAIK, got a friend who purchased it there a couple weeks ago. Not sure if they are running the same 10% discount, though, but I guess they should.
