I have over 2,000 hours on L4D2 and almost 4,000 hours on TF2. But they pretty much stopped adding new content to both games. It is a shame that there still isn't a modern era game that is similar to and is better than L4D2 or TF2.
The company who made them are pretty much done... but the community is quite active.

I'm at just under 4,000 on L4D2, new maps/campaigns and mods being made all the time by individuals.

And pretty much ZERO cheaters. Occasional jerks that hop on to kill others... but pretty rare.

Highly recommend L4D2

Is L4D still playable online? I mean I played it back in 2006 or whatever, but now?
There's some fun modded L4D2 servers that allow ~24 player co-op with lots of interesting things like tanks that have new abilities, special infected drop weapons/loot, and the incendiary/explosive boxes act as mystery boxes (spawns a tank, fully heals everyone around you, explodes...?)

As for L4D1 I still don't have the PC version (had it on Xbox 360 until the console broke), but I imagine the server browser still works and at least a few people are playing it... after all, this is a Valve game - they still have counter-strike playable online after over 20 years Smilie

These games are awesome. If you are OK with outdated graphics, you won't be disappointed!
The strength of l4d was always the director, no two gameplays are the same

It sure is and there's a big community still active. I started playing in 2008 and still do to this day.

I played through L4D, then got to L4D2 and found out that all the L4d levels were in L4D2...

For under $2 it's no big deal. But you might just want to play L4D2 instead of L4D...

I'll save everyone sometime.
L4d2 is still playable and is by far one of the best (polished) games out there. Considering that almost all new games have so many game breaking bugs.
The weapons in the game are balanced enough, and PvP is as well.
Sure you have your veterans and new players, but as long as you have decent aim and sound you'll be fine.
There's your regular vanilla servers for pvp or pve but there's also your modded ones. As someone who's played since 2010 I'll tell you that most hard-core players hate modded public servers.
Then there's your competitive servers currently running zonemod as well as 2 websites for you to look for a PUG if you want to play the game more serious.
The skill level in this game is not near where it was before, meaning that almost everyone is the same aside from knowing the mechanics of the game (ki pouncing as hunter to get the sweet 25 damage pounces, death charge, death pull spots) and different stuff like that.

Personally I think everyone should play or try both vanilla and competitive. Modded servers are just annoying, but maybe that's your thing? I just know l4d2 wasn't meant to have 10 survivors against 30 si or some hentai garbage.

The thing that separates the games is that l4d2 has more special infected than l4d and l4d1 does have better ragdolls and animations than l4d2.

That's about it.

If anyone needs further info about anything I've mentioned just let me know.

The original Left 4 Dead developers went on to make a spiritual successor and it completely bombed.

The game is called Back 4 Blood and from what I saw, they tried to remake L4D2 with a modern engine but also all the modern gimmicks. There's unlockables and possibly some paywalled stuff. The game looks great, but plays like garbage and already has a dead community.

Given that Valve is still working on engine updates and there's an entire community that grew up developing fan based content for the Source Engine, I don't doubt that we'll eventually get an updated Left 4 Dead — even if it's not created by Valve.

Also, a VR version would be a no-brainer.

crowbcat has a great video comparing the two. At the very end he displays the list of L4D2 creators and then blacks out all the ones who didn't work on Back 4 Blood. Of the 100+ people in the credits for L4D2 a total of six worked on Back 4 Blood. That was a very dishonest ad campaign they ran.
