it would use less power. also there were improvement in other areas like memory bandwidth etc.

however, yes intel was very lazy during that time, and ryzen just leapfrogged them.

A word of warning to those considering this deal. I tested two of these and both suffered from the same problem. The Gmail web client was unusable. I have no explanation for why this is the case, but it was bad enough that I had to return both machines. I tried everything to make it workable (i.e. multiple browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Edge), html version of Gmail, etc.). Nothing worked. I even reinstalled the OS from scratch. Using the exact same internet connection, performance was at least an order of magnitude faster on machines running intel CPU's that were two generations older. Benchmarks indicated the machines were running as expected. I would love to know if anyone has an explanation for this bottleneck. With the exception of the Gmail issue, I didn't see any other problems. I didn't see performance issue with any other workflows. Other content heavy web sites loaded quickly without issues. I really wanted to keep these machines as they are a great value, but could not work around the Gmail web client issue.

It was during a period of historic stagnation with Intel releasing smaller and smaller quad-cores with minor changes, and reserving 6-10 cores for its "Extreme" desktop lineup. One problem was the delay of 10nm by years due to technical issues, effectively ending Intel's "Tick-Tock" model [wikipedia.org].

But AMD is partly to blame for its awful Bulldozer microarchitecture that made it nearly irrelevant in desktops until Zen/Ryzen came out. Core counts were effectively fake, leading to a class-action lawsuit, clock speeds and power use were pushed high to little effect, and they didn't bother releasing high-end FX CPUs based on Steamroller and Excavator.

Without effective competition, greed takes over.

This is by far the weirdest deal I've seen people actually purchase. You are buying a used 7 year old computer.

BUT the average user will get several years out of this thing. Much more than can be said for a smart phone. I was given an Optiplex like this in 2015 and at the time it was already 5-7 years old. Added a cheap 120gb SSD and it's been a champ. I still use it a few times a month for web & email and used to do some light gaming on it. That's why I'm here now, considering buying another.

EDIT: you can get a USB WiFi adapter on Amazon for as low as $10.

OptiPlex 3060 with wifi ssd might be better deal. You do not need to do anything and it also support windows 11 for old people.

I have this OptiPlex 5050 SFF and have not noticed any problem with Gmail performance.

In addition to "same internet connection", are all other variables the same on the OptiPlex 5050 and your other machines (with older Intel CPUs but order of magnitude faster when using Gmail web)?

Would be surprised if what has been observed with Gmail performance is due to defective hardware.

Some variables to consider when comparing:
  1. OS version
  2. Browser version
  3. # of browser+windows open
  4. Visited sites on open browser+windows
  5. Browser cache state
  6. Extensions/Add-ons active, including blockers
  7. Firewall configuration
  8. Other running processes
  9. Amount of RAM
  10. HDD
  11. Time of day the tests are performed
I can confirm that all of the 11 items you listed were accounted for. Trust me when I tell you I looked very hard for an explanation. Like I said before, I don't want to keep anyone from buying one of these. Just check the performance of the Gmail web client once you have updated the computer. Hopefully this was somehow isolated to my setup. I would think if this was a generic problem I would have found some mention of it in the searches I performed. Hopefully someone reading this will buy one, test and report back.

I can't find information on available PCI/PCIe slots. Would anybody know?

I would like to add an ethernet or wifi adapter if possible to make a whole house VPN.

That's why we need someone like AMD.

That one is weird... did a quick search and couldn't find anything even remotely related. Love to hear the explanation if someone figures it out.
Also virtually impossible for it to have anything to do with this PC.

Any tech guru can comment if this is a SD for daily use? Just light duty.

it seems there were/are several Dell PC deals lately
I wouldn't jump on this. At the price it's tempting but lowest you should get is an 8th gen intel. This is a 6th gen intel which can't run windows 11 or future os. 6th gen will forever be stuck at windows 10 (although it's a great os)

That's weird. Does gmail web client work on other computers connected to the same network? Did you try your Dell refurbished computers on other networks?

I think according to this sheet the SFF has

Quote :
1 half height PCIe x16
1 half height PCIe x4
(open ended)
1 M.2 (22x80mm or
22x42mm)

Incredible NAS or home server machine. I think the fair market price is ~$100-120 atm. Pretty slick.

I'm considering picking one up to use as HTPC; we watch a lot of international content and being able to use this as a VPN streaming device is useful. Seems to have a low TDP which helps a lot.

Not sure what the internals look like but I can likely throw in some secondary drives to use as a home Plex server.

All things that a $150+ Apple TV cannot do.
