Everywhere else traveling by train is fast, efficient, inexpensive and safe. In the US it is slow, in-efficient, and very expensive.

Amtrak should do more sleeper cars promotion. A roommate from Los Angeles to New York for $2000+ is crazy

Last I checked was maybe a month ago or less- you could find even cheaper if willing to book weeks in advance- I forget the magic number: 3 or 4 weeks. Although overnight cheapest, couple other routes almost as cheap depending on which day of the week \ holiday \ season travel demand period.
Don't use any discount filters (senior\military\organization\disabled)- you'll only be presented full fares w\ the slight discount.
Northeast \ Mid-Atlantic yielded best results.
One example: NYC - Philly $6\7 each way while local NJTransit \ Septa= $26, or $12.15 senior\disabled. Even just instate local Newark-Trenton = $12.50 \ $5.70 senior \disabled.

The government doesn't own Amtrak. They do receive public infrastructure funding though. You know, like roads, oil companies, airlines, airports, etc.

People need to stop throwing out derailment numbers like they're all the same thing. 3 bad track switches resulting in a wheel popping off the track counts as 3. Several chemical cars upside down and on fire counts as 1. The numbers by themselves don't mean anything. Hyper sensationalism by the news exists, but I think that trying to downplay some major safety issues by saying that they have always been this bad is probably not a great idea.

Yeah, the US could certainly do better, but we're not a huge embarrassing outlier compared to every other first world country like we are with imprisonment, gun deaths, maternal mortality rates, executions, etc etc.
Parts of a couple of countries in Europe? I think you mean just about ALL of the countries in Europe. You have a point in the end, but starting with that was WAY off. I have traveled from London to Sofia and north Sweden to Calabria by train, for example, and other places.

Interestingly enough, I couldn't find any acela line trains for sale at all. They only had business or first class tickets listed. Would've used it for a DC to Boston for maybe labor day weekend but it wasn't meant to be. Oh well NYC for $40 on a holiday weekend is still worth it.

Last time I tried, it was massively MORE expensive than a plane ticket and unbelievably slow.
