Everywhere else traveling by train is fast, efficient, inexpensive and safe. In the US it is slow, in-efficient, and very expensive.
Amtrak should do more sleeper cars promotion. A roommate from Los Angeles to New York for $2000+ is crazy
They never have any deals like this for western US destinations....

People need to stop throwing out derailment numbers like they're all the same thing. 3 bad track switches resulting in a wheel popping off the track counts as 3. Several chemical cars upside down and on fire counts as 1. The numbers by themselves don't mean anything. Hyper sensationalism by the news exists, but I think that trying to downplay some major safety issues by saying that they have always been this bad is probably not a great idea.
This is helpful context, thanks.

PRR/B&O RR building out a massive rail network back in the day is why the NE Corridor exists... without em it would be sparse

I believe this deal is due to Amtrak being forced to cancel NYP-BOS overnight trains - track work in the Bronx i think?
That makes a lot of sense. All of the late night or early trains I've been looking at on that route are showing on their site as canceled. Thanks for the explanation! Was hoping to get a 4AM train home after a night of clubbing, but no luck. So, since the trains are only running partial routes, they're offering a discount.

Interestingly enough, I couldn't find any acela line trains for sale at all. They only had business or first class tickets listed. Would've used it for a DC to Boston for maybe labor day weekend but it wasn't meant to be. Oh well NYC for $40 on a holiday weekend is still worth it.
Acela trains don't have coach seats. This deal is only for coach seats.
Sometimes you can get lucky and find seats somewhat cheap on Acela if you book far enough in advance. Last time I took it, I got $61 for Bos-NYC.

YEah not worth traveling on Amtrak, slow, long. Wish we had high speed trains in US instead of flying all over. Would be nice to go cross country in a high speed train but it is never going to happen.
Bullet trains would make flying less necessary. Imagine a continental rail in the US.

Just do a search. Madrid, Spain to Barcelona, Spain a distance of about 387 miles takes 2 1/2 hours by train. Distance between NYC to DC is about 288 miles via Acela (Amtrak's faster ride) takes about 3 hours. Really do you need much proof??

That's a dumb oversimplification. America is an egalitarian society that blends the urban and the rural, in a legacy spirit of common carrier universal service - a gigantic factor in travel time, is how many stops along the way. Apples and oranges.

They sometimes auction off room upgrade on overnight traveling, but its only right before departure and you have to already be in a very pricy, very small Roomette. On the Southwest Chief which is Los Angeles to Chicago I was able to get an upgrade for $200 when it would have cost around $600. The full trip takes 3 days and a few grand. The meals for roomed passengers are 5 star meals with a waiter. Coach is rough and they don't get the same meals
