Source: Last year I took my 2 kids to Western Europe. We flew to 5 distinct locations within Europe (Europe to Europe). Our HIGHEST ticket price was $39/each. Most of the time we were paying ~$25. Train tickets were generally priced at $75 to $100 each. Buying a rail pass for our trips was going to cost $1200. We flew instead, which was much quicker, and paid a total of $425.
I believe this deal is due to Amtrak being forced to cancel NYP-BOS overnight trains - track work in the Bronx i think?
It's more in the news because the severity of derailments is increasing. 38 cars derailed On Feb 3, 28 cars derailed on March 5th. This is unusually severe: http://rail.rutgers.ed
Also, see the attached screenshot from that report of number of cars involved in these derailments. Most derailments are a much smaller number of cars. Therefore, not as national-news worthy.

Yes. And that Amtrak owns the rail lines on the east coast instead of leasing access to the rest of the network.
Odd because I've been told that Amtrak does NOT own a lot of rail in the northeast and has to take a backseat to its owner which is freight. From BOS to western NY, my mother would always be HOURS late and they'd tell her they'd have to hold for the track's owner, freight.
"Amtrak, officially called the The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, is a corporation that was chartered by the U.S. government in 1970 (operation began May 1, 1971). The federal government owns the majority of the stock (source), but despite this, Amtrak is classified as an independent agency."
"Other things to know: Amtrak has a Board of Directors that is appointed by the President of the United States, as well as a CEO and President. Additionally, Amtrak gets funding from multiple states and the federal government."
"Of the more than 22,000 miles on which it operates, Amtrak owns approximately 620 miles in the Northeast and Michigan. Some of the remaining miles are owned by states or regional transportation authorities, but the vast majority are owned by freight railroads."
