Everywhere else traveling by train is fast, efficient, inexpensive and safe. In the US it is slow, in-efficient, and very expensive.

Amtrak should do more sleeper cars promotion. A roommate from Los Angeles to New York for $2000+ is crazy

That is even worst then. If this is only a news highlight, and normally we aren't told. That would mean trains derail all the time and frequently. It's just the news is actually reporting right now. Then heck no, I don't want to ride a train. I'll fly, one person has died on a USA airline from 2010 to today.
They're not wrong. Saw a source that said on average there are approximately 1,700 train derailments every year in the US, and that 2023 is on par with that rate. It's easy to forget how much power news media has by virtue of choosing what to report and not report on.

This is a common misconception. In most of the rest of the world (Europe), flying is far cheaper and quicker.

Source: Last year I took my 2 kids to Western Europe. We flew to 5 distinct locations within Europe (Europe to Europe). Our HIGHEST ticket price was $39/each. Most of the time we were paying ~$25. Train tickets were generally priced at $75 to $100 each. Buying a rail pass for our trips was going to cost $1200. We flew instead, which was much quicker, and paid a total of $425.

Was thinking the same what a shame. I wonder if has to do with how densely packed NE is compared to the West. Also more people taking train in the NE?
PRR/B&O RR building out a massive rail network back in the day is why the NE Corridor exists... without em it would be sparse

I believe this deal is due to Amtrak being forced to cancel NYP-BOS overnight trains - track work in the Bronx i think?

We were sold the lie that being dependent on a personal vehicle is the epitome of freedom.

Can't search for any fares. Tried multiple dates and destinations from NYC. "We are temporarily unable to process your request. Please try again later. (Ref.MV8UTG38)"

The way trains have been derailing lately...No thanks. ☕️
they haven't been derailing more than "usual" it's just more in the news

Just people railing against "mainstream media" and taking it at face value because they're ill equipped to defend themselves from manipulation or lack any interest in researching a topic themselves. And they make these claims because debunking them takes much more effort that posting ignorant comments.

It's more in the news because the severity of derailments is increasing. 38 cars derailed On Feb 3, 28 cars derailed on March 5th. This is unusually severe: http://rail.rutgers.edu/files/Son...verity.pdf

Also, see the attached screenshot from that report of number of cars involved in these derailments. Most derailments are a much smaller number of cars. Therefore, not as national-news worthy.

Yes. And that Amtrak owns the rail lines on the east coast instead of leasing access to the rest of the network.

Agreed! I checked a fare for myself: St. Louis to Alburquerque NM, one way was $256 and would take 33+hours starting 6am Friday, transfer in Chicago and arriving after 3pm Saturday,Applause Sleeper car would be $1000.

Odd because I've been told that Amtrak does NOT own a lot of rail in the northeast and has to take a backseat to its owner which is freight. From BOS to western NY, my mother would always be HOURS late and they'd tell her they'd have to hold for the track's owner, freight.

Because the government owns Amtrak. I heard once that for every sandwich they serve, it costs taxpayers 18
"Amtrak, officially called the The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, is a corporation that was chartered by the U.S. government in 1970 (operation began May 1, 1971). The federal government owns the majority of the stock (source), but despite this, Amtrak is classified as an independent agency."
"Other things to know: Amtrak has a Board of Directors that is appointed by the President of the United States, as well as a CEO and President. Additionally, Amtrak gets funding from multiple states and the federal government."

"Of the more than 22,000 miles on which it operates, Amtrak owns approximately 620 miles in the Northeast and Michigan. Some of the remaining miles are owned by states or regional transportation authorities, but the vast majority are owned by freight railroads."
