Another reason for cellular versions is that the LTE versions have GPS built in if your using it for maps. That's useful even if you never pick a data plan.

If using your hotspot works stick with it. However, some may want to be on a different network for whatever reason. Also the antennae on the iPad is larger than any phone's, so reception especially for data use will be better. It's all about options.

Because using your phone as a hot spot uses a lot of power. A 12.9 iPad Pro has a much bigger battery.

Also depending on someone's data plan, if you only need a cellular once in a while, like on vacation, you may be better off having a cel phone plan with a lower data plan, then just get a temp data plan for the iPad when your on vacation.cancel it when your done. This allows you to have two different cellular providers.

Can you not just use your phone as a hot spot?
That's what I do. Not sure how speeds match up with a direct connection but it's always been more than sufficient.

So are you saying you could have it in your car with a mount, and use it for a GPS without paying anything extra?

It depends. Technically if you have a map app that downloads all its maps, the cellular iPads have a chip to find their location. Wi-Fi only iPads use the Wi-Fi beacons to get a rough location, not as accurate as the cellular versions.

Haha... yeeeeeah dude, original battery LOL! Coconut Battery screenshot attached. 32GB, what a major pain in the ass. Back then, I didn't make as much. I used money I saved up from doing software testing jobs to buy it. Totally worth it, no regret from buying the device. Definitely regretted buying the 32GB!! Not that I every used it in a way where I needed storage honestly. I have used it for movies, for reading in bed, for watching streaming content (e.g. Formula 1 races), while traveling, etc. But yeah I'll be going for 1TB I'm pretty sure this time, f*ck that. Torn between 512GB M2 WiFi only, versus 1TB M1 WiFi + LTE only. 1st world problem.

Given its age, if the battery is at a very low % (or dead), I charge it with the 5W charger. Just to charge it slowly and keep the temps down (overnight, for example). If it's at ~70% or some higher percentage, I'll use the 30W or 87W USB-C.
One consideration is the 1TB and 2TB versions have 16gb of memory. Like you said 1st world problem.

Haha yes, well put! And excellent point. With that in mind, I ordered the 1TB M1 + LTE and the 512GB M2 WiFi. I'll compare the specs, read reviews, etc. and then only open the one I decide to keep. I'm tempted to go for the 1TB due to 16GB RAM (future proofing more than anything, honestly).

I've had this 12.9" iPad Pro now for 7 years and 4 months, the longest I've ever kept an iOS device. Can't wait to have a performant iPad again. Thanks for the reply and info.

I guess I'll have to see if there is a setting for Google Maps to see if it downloads maps (no idea), and then keep this in mind for the future.

Have you done it?

I don't think it's strictly a question of having a bunch of discretionary income. My mother is a good example. I bought her a 12.9" iPad Pro a couple of years ago, plus the keyboard + trackpad folio. She takes it with her on trips, on the train, to buddhist crap she does. She can take it to bed to read, or have it on the sofa for the same. Keyboard is optional. If she wants to sit and read with it in bed --> remove from the folio. EZ. Holding a MacBook Air in bed, to read or watch video on, is not exactly practical shake headSmilie. At almost 70 years old, for her this is a laptop replacement. And for her, it's a better choice than the MacBook Air. Everyone's use case is different.

For most consumers you don't need cellular unless you want a dedicated internet option. Hotspots work if you have a power source to charge your phone and the data plan. However, I like the convenience and assurance that I will always have data no matter what on the cellular side of the iPad. I do use the iPad for work and need it to have cellular data. If I was using it leisurely and at home mostly wifi (no cellular) would work fine. Just depends on your needs but the price for this is very good. I bought one for $1400 when it first came out. So this price is a slick deal.
