power consumption on 7900 xt would be lower than 6950xt.
I think 7900 XT is ~8.5% faster than 6950 XT.

I think $135 for the 7900XT may be worth the jump. But $1000 for the 7900XTX is pretty steep.

Thanks for the info! Interesting power consumption is lower. I guess they're getting more efficient.

The 7900 XT is a decent bump in performance, and has an extra 4gb of VRAM, while drawing less power. However, the biggest reason I would suggest getting a 7900 xt over a 6xxx series card is the driver support. I had an R9 390 that performs basically identical to the RX 480 and refresh RX 580, however despite being close in performance it has ceased to receive any further driver updates, rendering it essentially obsolete. The 6 series is already 2 years into its lifespan, and will stop receiving updates sooner than the 7 series. If the 6950 were considerably cheaper, I would say go for that, but honestly an extra 100-150 is worth the extra lifespan.

You don't need driver updates..
I purposely use old "stable" drivers for any given card, and never update

This - the 7900XT is an objectively better card (with drivers being the main risk - new vs established - though the RDNA2 drivers were a rollercoaster too), and with new pricing it's a much more compelling value than before.

I just replaced an Asrock Formula OC 6900XT (essentially a 6950, XTXH revision) with an OB 7900XT (Powercolor Reference) - sold old for $630, bought new for $770. While the 6900 was an awesome card, the 7900XT blows it away. My use case is very specific, it's a portable ITX box (with a handle!) that's plugged into a 4k/165 monitor and 4k/120 TV in the family room, and gets taken to friends houses, so often 4k/120 TVs. Honestly a reason to change for me was the USB-C port found on the powercolor (many previous gen have it too), which can power a portable monitor and drive touchscreen via usb, so one cable. This probably doesn't matter to most, but factored into my decision.

It's been a huge bump. ~20k timespy graphics to ~26k (with an undervolt), seems to be running cooler and definitely quieter on the same loads, and nice to be able to still use regular PSU plugs. Also a very small card - fits in a Lian Li TU150 with tons of room to spare. Most importantly (vs benchmarks), it's a nice bump at 4k 120 which a lot of TVs will have/is less of a niche. Good monitors like the 27M2V are coming out too.

The XTX is obviously better, but has been priced out of value IMO. My main desktop has a 4090, and despite its ridiculous price it does hold value vs other top cards this gen and last. That and the XT seem to be the best value right now; the 4080 and XTX are too high, even with open box or other discounts, and the 4070ti is a joke. I can see definitely getting the previous gen (6900/6950, 3080ti/3090, etc) over the 12/8gb 4070/60ti type cards or the 4070ti, but it's much more of a toss-up on the 6950xt vs 7900xt - especially if you can find one a little lower than the new $800 price.

Just my $.02 as I went through a lot of deliberation over making the change.

My 6700xt does 130ish on Halo Infinite w some settings dialed down. But it does on a 34 ultrawide screen.
Biggest fps increase is between this and 6800xt.
And between 6800xt and 69xx xt is 14% for $150 ish more.
I'd say 6800xt is where it's at right now.

8.5%? LOL it's like 15-30% faster at 1440p depending on the game. I'd say average 20%.

Even faster over Rdna2 at ray tracing.
