It is only 14/3. I thought the cable was 12/3. I pass
same way i knew what cords were light and heavy duty as a kid... because my parents were parents and taught me.
doing the people around you a real disservice making things idiot proof.

light duty things are perfectly viable options and meant for what they're meant for. besides the jacketing is the more important bit here...
How can you control that someone in your family may use it as a piece of a long daisy chain of power cord extensions? I rather prevent it from happening right now by not buying it than any incident can happen.

Both this cord and the Costco Cords are cheap CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum) wire which is why they are stiff. CCA = Higher Resistance + Lower Capacity than old school pure copper extension cords. That's why they are relatively inexpensive. All Copper Wire cords will brag about it on the packaging as it is a major selling point - All Copper wire cords conduct electricity better, are more flexible, and last longer than CCA cords - which is why all copper wire cords are more expensive.

Most circuits in a house are wired with 14/2. Nothing wrong with 14/2 extension cords; especially under 50'. An issue may arise running high powered items when the length exceeds 50' as there will be a slight voltage drop. Another issue is when drawing close to 15 amps and the cord is in direct sunlight on a 90 degree day; the cord will heat up.
The big problem is that manufactures like to use the term 'heavy duty'. Many people think they're getting a great cord at $2.98 because it's 'heavy duty'.
The advantage of 14/2 cords are that they are lighter to carry and easier to wrap up plus they'll work with and single device that has a 15 amp plug on it.

I never realized people were such snobs when it comes to extension cords. What are you guys doing with your cords that you think 14/3 isn't good enough and that it's 12/3 or nothing? I bet most average joes out there are using cheap 16/3 for damn near everything and aren't having issues.

No, I don't use 16/3, I use 14/3 and think that's perfectly fine for most things the average homeowner does. (Edit: I forgot that I do have one 25ft 16/3 cord for light duty stuff like starting my snowblower since it's easier to wrap up and stuff, and the female plug end is small enough to fit my snowblower.)
