You actually don't have to trade anything in. You basically walk up to their signage and scan the QR code with the Target app. For Target app first time the users, you will have to create a profile. To bring up the coupon to use it's saved in your "Wallet" > "Saved Offers" of the Target app. Scan it during check out. This was not obvious when I did this last year. I kept scanning the QR code and there were no additional instructions on the signage.
Also one more tip is to create baby registry and new profile with bday that falls during the redemption time for another 15% plus 5% off

not sure if you can create wedding registry as well for additional 15%

generally they all stack together for atleast 40-50%. off .. else it ain't a slickdeal

Yeah. I was excited to "recycle" my old car seat then went to the event last time and found out they don't even check. They actually had a printed barcode where people can just scan and get the 20%.
Recycle? More like land fill. I saw the big box of "old" seats at a local Target. Most looked new. Definitely not 10 years old. That is the manufacturer cut off.

I asked if I could have one. They said no of course.

Do the world a favor and list your slightly used carseat on one of the many second hand sites. I usually put some symbolic $5 price on them and then just hand it over for free.

Still doesn't make it right. This thinking is a slippery slope and why walmarts are closing in theft area cities.
Do you know of a likely way they would monetize the recycling of the seat? It seems unlikely Target would really try to salvage the materials. Otherwise a freely scannable coupon seems a bit far from equating theft, especially since the coupon likely means a big purchase from Target

It's possible that the car seats could have been involved in a car accident but still look new. The guidance is usually any seat involved in an accident should be replaced, sometimes even if no child was even in the seat at the time. I had a car accident last year where insurance covered car seat replacement but we just have the old seat sitting around waiting to get "recycled"

FYI. Last time I got this coupon it was able to be used twice (two separate transactions), and it works on some misc items. I got a car seat and then a jumper/walker thing with it.

Does anyone know if the list of participating stores expands closer to the event? Very few options in DC metro area, despite the website saying almost all stores participate.

Anyone have a link to the products that are restricted from the coupon? It says there are some restrictions but I can't locate them anywhere

Do boosters qualify?
Yes! Per Event FAQs:

What type of car seat qualifies for a trade in?

Target will accept and recycle all types of car seats, including: infant car seats, convertible car seats, car seat bases, harness or booster car seats, as well as car seats that are expired or damaged. Guests will receive a 20% off coupon for trading in any one of these items.

Anyone know if the 20% off coupon is valid for Mockingbird or Peg Prego strollers? I know on baby items many brands often get excluded.

I think I used it on mockingbird before and it works. Hopefully they didn't change it.

We have a few local groups where you can give out almost anything, besides car seats. Admins don't allow listing them because there's no way to know the history of the car seat by looking at it.

I got all excited because I need a new car seat as my wife is due in the middle of April. Hopefully the baby can wait for us to make the trade, lol.
That's when I'm due as well!! Congratulations... I'm hoping to make the trade before my little one gets here as well!!

I don't know how much of the greenwashing we can believe, but Target partners with a recycling company (I THINK it's Terracycle) to recycle old or expired seats. If they hold true to their word that's a lot better than ending up in a landfill. I tried giving away our car seats through Freecycle and Craigslist and no takers unfortunately, so this is my last option because I absolutely do not want them to end up in the garbage.

I also tried donating and they would not take them due to age.

Yea don't listen to this guy. Also 8 days compared to full term? Complete term? Please don't give bad advice to parents as it may risk their ability to seek proper care
