These are open back headphones per the manufacturer [akg.com]. Adorama incorrectly states "Cup style: Closed-back."

I thought studio reference monitors and headphones weren't supposed to be bass heavy. The intended use of these is for recording so the levels need to be relatively "flat" across the board

These are not bad headphones 10 years ago. The main issue I have with all the older AKG stuff is there is next to no bass. I am not a bass head by any means, but these all sounded hollow to me. Like half the music was missing. I sold my k702's after a few months and never looked back. I would take a look at the Fidelio X3 or something like that. At least you are getting a full range headphone.

Love my Fidelio X2 for sound and comfort. Will have to look into the X3.

It is not the same beast fair warning. Much more level and "audiophile" sounding, but still fun and good for the price. Also, quick tip, the Audeze LCD-1 cable fits them and is the cheapest way to rid yourself of the god awful stock cables.

Thanks for the advice! Now to find a justification for another pair of headphones. Wink

Sold mine for the same reason, non existent bass. And I know they're open back, but my HD650's have beautiful bass. These sound thin. Sold them for this much many years ago.

I'm in the minority that like the sound and bass of the K701/K601 Smilie

They have a neutral bass response. My favorite headphones next to the MDR V6. I also have 650, 880 pro, m50, ksc75, xpt100. This is a deal.
