The S20 Ultra suffered from focusing & camera lag issues. these were significantly improved, but not 100% fixed, via software updates. They just got One UI 5.1 atop Android 13 which will be their last significant software update. They will get security updates for at least one more year. I have used a couple of older Samsung devices with OneUI 5.0 and 5.1 and they are quite smooth so these devices should be going out in good shape software-wise.

Also worth noting is that the S20 Ultra has a massive 5k mAh battery which is the same as the S22 & S23 Ultra. The S20 Ultra has a 6.9" screen which is the largest ever on a Samsung device alongside the Note 20 Ultra. The S20+ has a 6.7" screen which is a smidge larger than the current S23/S22+.

These are the final Galaxy S models to support microSD expansion and the first to support 45W Wired charging. Also the final Galaxy S models to support Samsung Pay MST (the Note 20 Ultra being the final one to support those features). Finally, although the hardware supports it, there were some behind the scenes shenanigans and these devices never received 5G midband support on any carrier. Apple's iPhone 12 has the same 5G qualcomm chipset and got updated to support those frequencies in addition to mmwave and low-band. So you won't see "UWB" very much on these devices, if ever. I had a Note 20 for 18 months so I know. When I upgraded from a Note 20 Ultra to the S22 Ultra I got mid-band support and a significantly improved 5G experience.

I would have no issues buying one of these for a 1 year "rental" or as a wi-fi based device to fiddle with or as a kids' phone. Compared to, say, a comparably priced Moto G budget handset, these will run circles around it in camera & SoC performance and especially screen quality. You'll also get wireless charging and significantly faster wired charging IF you use a proper PPS PD charger.

Is paying for a Samsung glagship even worth it anymore given the huge drop in resale value?

Have a 23 ultra glagger (love it ) and wondering if the best approach is to trade in or sell every year for a new glagship. Sold my s22 ultra for $725 and jumped on the Google Fi deal so the upgrade costs around $50.

Unless they put satellite SOS messaging in a future release I have no real need to upgrade ever.

Maybe I'll get downvoted for this, but if you're looking to buy an "inexpensive" phone (because it's generations old) and want a good camera, i would stay away from the S20 Ultra.

Is the camera good? it actually is good and takes great shots. BUT, there are known issues out there with the focusing system (google "s20 ultra camera focusing issue"). My phone definitely had it and I tried fixing with multiple resets.

I would be "close" to the subject (3 feet, my dog). I'd want to take a picture of him holding a treat, he's taking up 75% of the frame, yet the camera is focusing on the floor/furniture behind him. Even clicking the screen it might focus, but once you take a pic it focuses on the background. It was insanely frustrating. When you could get a good shot (i swear like 50% of the time or less), it was good, but I "lost" a lot of cute pics of the pup

I went to [a large, well established used electronics site] and purchased the Google 6 Pro for $320 and LOVE it. I was bummed because I wanted an elite phone with MicroSD, but the camera on the S20 Ultra was the deal breaker. For reference, over the last 10 years I've owned the original Galaxy, Galaxy 2, most of the phones on the LG line up through the G6 or G7, then the S20 Ultra and now Google 6 Pro.

Thanks OP. Not for me (Id have gotten a N20 ultra at the right price and condition), but definitely not bad. Updates are *highly* overrated (I still rock a note 9 for my work phone) Even not using the phone, you can trade in some stuff here for $799+ towards other phones at sites like Google Fi.

Ignore the pedants in this thread who embody the usual late-stage capitalist victims of the spotlight effect.
