I'm not a coffee expert but I've used something similar that's designed for tea for coffee. Does it pass a bunch of coffee grinds? You betcha. Is a French press better for coffee? Yup, much less crap in my cup. But french press that I have is huge and I don't always want to make that much coffee so I use something similar. Ymmv

The answer is maybe / probably.
It's very simlar to a pour over. You'd just have to let the water drain a bit as you remove the filter.
It might not be what it's designed for but I'd be willing to bet it would work good enough.
